Henry VII Society facebook page - which was created Thursday and already claims to be a non-profit - is hilarious. A few Ricardians are over there but it really needs to be swamped. Payback is SUCH a bitch. Maire.

OK, I did a search and found one created 2008, with exactly ONE member. I guess that isn't it.

Sadly, it already appears that I've been "unfriended" by Henry the Seventh. Boy, does he have thin skin! Maire.

Are you on Facebook? It takes a few seconds to get signed up. I appear to have been thrown off already.

So typical of Henry Tudor! 500 years of defamation and all I said was that he hid behind a tree when Richard charged him and I am...unfriended. I said nothing about him losing control of his bowels during the charge. I thought that was very nice of me. Maire.

I'm not making it up. It claims to be a non-profit (yes, I know Henry would be furious) after being founded on Thursday. When I ran a theatre group, it took us 3 years to achieve non-profit status. And it's a lot of work! Maire.

No, it's not! Although I was only a friend for 5 minutes it's all about what wonderful folks those Tudor males were! I wish the Richard the Third Society would get over being in good taste and go after these strange people.

Our theatre group, Dramatic Question Theatre, got non-profit status in
about 8 or 9 months and that was considered record time.

No way the group was founded on Thursday and got non-profit status by now:
the paperwork alone is complicated; and then there's oversight by the IRS
(who are very helpful, by the way).

Trouble is, Maire, the boot doesn't work either. You'll have seen for yourself how easily immoderate or passionate language can be turned against the user (eg some of the mickey-taking of Philippa). It's a tightrope, and the Society's PR officer is very experienced. The tide is in our favour at the moment, and blood-curdling whinges from unreconstructed traditionalists only show that they realise it too.

I don't think it's really non-profit.  I suspect they just put that because it sounds good.  AFter all, unless they make people pay to sign up or sell stuff (which they aren't) how could a FB page be profit making?

The Society is far more experienced in dealing with the media than I am. And, sadly, sometimes you just can't win! I'm absolutely appalled at the treatment of Phillipa Langley. To me, she is a heroine.

Still, it is a wonderful time to be a Ricardian, isn't it? Maire.

The people I know who are genuinely interested in the life and reign of
Henry VII are in no way 'anti-Richard'. They sometimes get frustrated at
the level of anti-Tudor they come across. Why not just leave them in peace
to study, research, read and write about whatever time/person in history
they choose?

Why do you want to 'start a war on Henry Tudor'? Why not just leave the
people who are interested in him to get on with it in peace? A good many of
my friends who are interested in the Tudors have been genuinely excited
about the finding of Richard III's bones. I've not heard one unkind word.
I'm sitting here, reading this thread and genuinely hurting for those people
and fearing the worst for their groups. They don't come stomping into
Richard III groups being nasty, why on earth would any of us go to their
groups to be nasty? The history community on facebook is quite closeknit,
NOT divided along 'us' and 'them' lines. We respect each other's interests.
I'm sorry if I sound preachy, but this attitude is seriously worrying.

I did not think of it that way, Karen. Sometime I do forget that these people are well, people. The moment I think of H7 I see Richard's battered body. Specially after seeing the skeleton it seems I have joined the rank of haters. But you are right on this. I have nothing personal against this, probably lovely people.
Just the fact that there is a H7 page was a little unsettling , I have to confess.

There's a lot of emotion invested in Richard, more than any other historical
'personage' that I can think of. I guess this spills out sometimes in places
where it maybe shouldn't. The person I know who is most interested (and
admiring of) Henry Tudor is a very lovely person indeed!

If the Henry Tudor's Society is non-profit, wouldn't it be the first time in history that anything related to him was not for profit?

Maybe my prejudice is showing because I've always seen him more as a vicious accountant than a good king.

I have no love lost for H7 but never felt this searing hatred either if truth be told. It all seems so personal now.
I think all our nerves are a bit frayed right now and we will be quick to pick fight with the " other side" as we perceive them to be.
Good night!

Yes, the only person Henry Tudor would become the "patron saint of" would
have been Ebenezer Scrooge. (imho.)

Sorry to be so vicious about Henry - however, this is a bit of compensatory
payback in my view for a 500-year-old injustice. After all, Henry was the
short-term winner back then, not only winning the throne but responsible
(ultimately) for the besmirching of his predecessor's character.

I think it's completely harmless, and as someone else said, venting here
makes it less likely that I'll go vent elsewhere.

Yes, I'd rather be "pro, positive" for Richard rather than "anti, hateful"
to poor old Henry.

I think that's why I hate Henry so much (and I know it's absurd to hate a man whose been dead 500 years - but I do) but it's the trashing of Richard reputation and the lies.  Although of course we could ask, how much of that was Margaret Beaufort and Morton rather than Henry himself?

I also loathe (generally, not specific to Henry) people who are mean with money so he loses there too.

Do you know what? I am beginning to feel the tide is turning. Articles in two of the Sunday newspapers that I have read today are, OMG ,quite fair and unbiased and not repeating the oft mentioned hunchback or murdering of the little nephews. Instead I have read an opinion that Richard should lay in state at York before his burial at Leicester...(nice thought) and also another comment how comes his teeth were in a lot better condition that most of the contestants that appear in the Jeremy Kyle show...Yikes I am feeling a breakthrough!!!! Bring it on.....

Ah Liz I feared someone would ask that...at the risk of being maligned..well that has happened to people much better than myself so I must bear it.....for reading poopy newspapers...The Sunday Express and the Mail on Sunday...The koff koff DE has a pullout poster...for the teenyboppers amongst us I suppose..and key members of the dig have been interviewed and quotes. Eileen, I read about the Friends of Friendless Churches wanting to examine the remains of Richard of Eastwell. They would have to do it after they find the Y chromosome. If that matches then if there are any descendants of the Woodville Family i.e. a direct female line descendant ( I'm sure Stephen will know), it could be Richard Duke of York or if not he could be Richard's son. Very exciting and interesting. I have thought for a long time that Richard of Eastwell should be investigated further. Every little helps, any bits of evidence to complete the jigsaw.

Stephen Lark
Mary: Eastwell would have a Y- match with our Richard if he were either his son or Richard of Shrewsbury. I will investigate the Woodville roots for mtDNA soon but not in the next month.

The tomb often said tro be that of Richard of Eastwell is almost certainly a Moyle tomb, though, isn't it, with Richard himself being buried anonymously somewhere in the church or its grounds.

Hmmm...I presume that the group of people who would like this to happen are fairly sure where Richard's remains are? Eileen?

Stephen, I am sorry I have phrased that badly, that's what I meant. If the Y chromosome matches then he is either Edward's or Richard's son. I suppose he could be Clarence's too if he ever had one. In view of our discussion earlier regarding Richard's care for humble soldiers, it could be possible that he would care for a son of Clarence if indeed there was one, I mean an illegitimate one. Thank you for offering to investigate Woodville roots.

I am sure you are only saying that because you know me to be an admirer
of Vlad, who saved Europe from being taken over by the Turks!
Maybe Genghis Khan would have been better than Caligula!

Carol responds:

Just out of curiosity, Karen, and I'm not being sarcastic or rude but genuinely curious, what does your friend find to admire about Henry, who was not a lovely person even in the view of Tudor supporters like Sir Thomas More? I could make a long list of reasons why I don't admire him, but I suspect there's no need and certainly no time. (I have no time for Facebook, either, but I do wonder whether this Henry VII Society is a fly-by-night fan club calling itself a nonprofit organization or whether it includes scholars and, if so, what they would write about. I know that someone was planning a new biography of Henry VII but I don't know whether it's come out. What ironic timing if it appears right about now. If I were the author, I'd have waited for the results of the dig before publishing, but he may not have had the opportunity.

BTW, I see no harm in joking about Henry (or Richard) on this list, especially now when everyone needs an emotional outlet. But if we want to counter their views on their own ground, I think it's best to do so using facts and a respectful tone.

Carol said:, what does your friend find to admire about Henry, who was not a lovely person even in the view of Tudor supporters like Sir Thomas More?

Liz:  Carol, I  asked that very question on the HT FB page (very politely and said I was genuinely curious).  As yet no one has answered.

Carol: I  do wonder whether this Henry VII Society is a fly-by-night fan club calling itself a nonprofit organization or whether it includes scholars and, if so, what they would write about.

Liz: It appears to have been set up by a Welsh guy in his late 20s  (there's another HT page  that also has around 200 members and he mentioned it on there) who says he hopes it will one day become a real society.  I suspect he's some young chap with an interest in history and has decided to  piggyback on the interest there is right now.  I also think - as I suggested earlier - he doesn't realise that you can't call yourself a Non-Profit Org. without going through certain steps to make yourself one, but since it's only an FB page right now, I don't think that really matters.

If he's calling his group an non-profit in the USA it does make a difference to the IRS. To be a non-profit, i.e., a 501(C)3, you must submit the proper forms and paperwork to the IRS and be very careful regarding financials. There are yearly reports required by the government regarding legitimate expenses, etc. There are also severe restrictions on what a non-profit can and cannot do depending upon the precise configuration. For example if he's accepting any kind of contributions and he really a isn't a non-profit then the gift cannot be deducted by the giver who would likely report it as a charitable contribution. I set up the 501(C)3 for the Jussi Bjorling Society - USA and the process takes a couple of months. We are extremely careful about what is and is not deductible. Bottom line... he shouldn't call himself a non-profit if he isn't.

I sent them a private message about the 501 C 3. They haven't answered me. I was involved with a private charity that ran into trouble with the IRS and believe me, you don't want to go in that direction! Maire.

He's British though so I'm not sure what the rules are here and I don't think it applies to FB pages obviously.  If he does set up a proper Society though, he'll have to be careful but I'm sure someone will point it out to him.

Always nice to meet someone who also appreciates Bjorling's glorious voice. I helped to found JBS-USA back in 1998, and we partner with the Swedish Society and the Jussi Bjorling Appreciation Society in Britain. There are other Bjorling groups world wide. It was great fun and an opportunity to meet some very lovely singers as well as the Bjorling family. If you ever get to Sweden by all means head to the Bjorling Museum in Borlange. You might also want to check out the Society's website at
http://www.jussibjorlingsociety.org/ where you'll find recordings that are not commercially available.

Among my favourites..I have loads....Rutters Requiem...I keep telling my husband I want this played at my funeral...please remember...lol. Also Faure's Requiem...which I believe should be played at Richard' s funeral...

Incidentally I just got a reply on Henry Tudor Society FB to my question (saying that I didn't understand why they admired HT and was genuinely curious to see if someone could tell me what it was about him that they liked)

The answer was "why are you here then?"  Says it all as far as I'm concerned.

I am genuinely alarmed. I saw nothing written by either Liz or Marie that are mean or ill natured in anyway.......

I would strongly suggest simply to avoid the site as they probably are just itching for any opportunity to argue or receive perceived hurt.
The right to free speech unfortunately does not add intelligence to any argument remember the prayer "Lord please make me keep my mouth closed,so people may perceive my stupidity, rather than open it and remove any doubt"

Yes, I've decided it is best to ignore some people (even one on this forum). For your own peace of mind!

Ishita, you have nothing to apologise for and neither do I.  I also see no need for anyone else to apologise for us.

I think we've spent enough time talking about them to be honest.

I did try to apologize the Karen for what I thought was my rude remark. But just a few minutes back I visited that page and the vitriol being spewed about the RIII supporters is astonishing!!! I am genuinely alarmed. I saw nothing written by either Liz or Marie that are mean or ill natured in anyway.......

There was one girl on there called Rachel I think who seemed far more sensible but then she did "confess" that she wasn't a big H fan, just interested generally in the period I think.

I won't go back though - I  tried to ask what I think was a  sensible  question (why do they admire him) and no one gave an answer. Maire made one silly joke plus a comment which seems to have some historical fact behind it.  She got blocked and I've been criticised by various parties because apparently my question was rude.  It seems we are expected to put up with comments without being allowed to make any ourselves and are then accused of being "Ricardian bullies" etc.

It's a shame really because I would like a serious answer from someone as to why people admire H VII and being told that people might wonder why I admire Richard doesn't really cut it since I am prepared to answer that question, should anyone ask it.

I posted on a closed Ricardian group that " there is a H7 society out there". Just that one sentence and had people at my throat. And one girl Geanine was so rude and combative I actually deleted my post. Doesn't make sense to pick fight with strangers......Its strange that 500 year old history can stir so much passion and animosity in people!
Just wondering why would people who thinks Richard was a " hunchback creep" join a Ricardian group. And they keep calling us trolls:/

My friend's interest in Henry VII isn't on a personal level, but on his
kingship. You'd have to check out her page and her blog to find out more!
She isn't anti-Richard, having an interest in the Tudors doesn't come with a
requirement to hate the Plantagenets, or Richard III. As I said, every Tudor
'fan' I know followed the news from Leicester with great interest and
genuine delight. First and foremost, they are interested in history, not
taking sides.

I tried to explain earlier (and was accused of acting like a grade 5
teacher!) that 'jokes' are made all the time about this or that historical
figure, but the right to make those jokes has to be earned through mutual
trust. After what happened on the THS page, a number of people have
expressed their (renewed) wariness of Ricardians. This is very sad and very
damaging.

admiring of) Henry Tudor is a very lovely person indeed!

Carol responds:

Just out of curiosity, Karen, and I'm not being sarcastic or rude but
genuinely curious, what does your friend find to admire about Henry, who was
not a lovely person even in the view of Tudor supporters like Sir Thomas
More? I could make a long list of reasons why I don't admire him, but I
suspect there's no need and certainly no time. (I have no time for Facebook,
either, but I do wonder whether this Henry VII Society is a fly-by-night fan
club calling itself a nonprofit organization or whether it includes scholars
and, if so, what they would write about. I know that someone was planning a
new biography of Henry VII but I don't know whether it's come out. What
ironic timing if it appears right about now. If I were the author, I'd have
waited for the results of the dig before publishing, but he may not have had
the opportunity.

BTW, I see no harm in joking about Henry (or Richard) on this list,
especially now when everyone needs an emotional outlet. But if we want to
counter their views on their own ground, I think it's best to do so using
facts and a respectful tone.

I don't think they'll have a problem unless they start charging a fee to join, in which case the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) will be all over them to pay their share of taxes on the profits. I suspect that the organizer doesn't have a clue what he is doing and that his Henry VII Society resembles the Richard III Society in name only. However, I spend as little time on Facebook as possible and have not checked it out, so I could be completely mistaken.

You might as well stay away from them, Ishita. By the way, how did you make out in the storm? Maire.

Maire made one silly joke plus a comment which seems to have some historical fact behind it. She got blocked and I've been criticised by various parties because apparently my question was rude. It seems we are expected to put up with comments without being allowed to make any ourselves and are then accused of being "Ricardian bullies" etc.
