Wowsers, that is interesting. So, how do we track down that story, and determine if it was a hoax or reality? Lots of possibilities&..If it was found, the unscrupulous could have removed the coffin, and simply put the bones back in the ground. I cannot imagine that with an actually reported story, there is not some corroboration or dismissal. Since there was a monument at the site where it was supposed that he was thrown into the river, I suppose it could have been dismissed, but I simply cannot imagine why.

As the team who found R3 said that he has been undisturbed for over500 years I find it totally implausible to believe that he had been found and reinterred.
Just think about what has happened and the detailed excavation, at no time did they say anything about the site being disturbed apart from H8 and a Victorian out house.
If it sounds too good to be true........

I find it interesting that as this story develops, more and more people are coming out of the woodwork with their own bits of R3 history. A lot of people would appear to be claiming their 2 min of fame with very little attention to fact. Another good reason for informed debate.

Johanne Tournier
Hi, Liz, Pamela, and George

I don't think the story has anything to do with the horse trough, because I don't believe that was ever located in a church.

Also, George, I don't think there's any implication that Richard's body was dug up and reinterred, especially not since 1935!

Receding forehead like you, Liz, I've never heard of that applied to the Plantagenets, let alone Richard. But the prominent jaw, well, yes that fits.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the Church of St. Mary is not the same as the Church of the Greyfriars Friary, but I'm not an expert on the churches of Leicester.

But the gentleman allegedly in charge of the excavation at the Leicester Technical College is named L. W. Kershaw, and I would think there must be some records at Leicester that would indicate if it was a legitimate event and if the body and coffin might still be there. It sure would be interesting to know who the skeleton might be! (One of the many Plantagenet or Lancaster cousins, perhaps?)

Well, yes, no doubt, but this story dates from 1935 certainly not a time of anything like the RIII mania that we've seen recently. I think this goes under the heading of aliens in Roswell, also the supposed stone coffin that had been used as a rose bed was discovered to be a medieval horse trough.

I've had that thought as well. As Dorothy Parker once said about the dead F. Scott Fitzgerald: "Not only are they digging up his bones but they're chewing on them." Maire.

Alas - that is true. Perhaps when they've struggled as we have they might tire a little; but I do respect those who on here who are patiently explaining things. And who knows, out of all this the odd 'letter from the attic' might emerge. I shall be more positive and learn to read faster !   H.

Yes, and for everything done in an organized, orderly, scholarly and scientific manner. If this is not meticulously documented and proven it could well end in a fiasco.

Oh Hilary how I agree with you and have been debating with the idea of posting a message to that effect but thought I would sound like a killjoy after all the general euphoria. The papers are full of jokes about it all and he will now forever be known as 'The King in the car park'...not very respectful. He had been buried in consecrated ground after all, albeit seemingly hurriedly, and I think now that he should have been left there. What good has it done to disturb him after all these years, we have learned little from the discovery and as for that dreadful facial reconstruction....each time I see it I just see Tyrone Dobbs from Coronation Street! Give me the National Portrait Gallery picture every time. I thought at first that the rather strange Philippa had done a good job but now I just think that the whole thing has been a dreadful mistake and the man should just have been left in peace where he was.

Lots of possibilities…..If it was found, the unscrupulous could have removed the coffin, and simply put the bones back in the ground. I cannot imagine that with an actually reported story, there is not some corroboration or dismissal. Since there was a monument at the site where it was supposed that he was thrown into the river, I suppose it could have been dismissed, but I simply cannot imagine why.

Carol responds:

What got me about the story was that it listed a receding forehead as an identifying feature of Richard's? Where did that slander come from? Not even Shakespeare, the worst of his detractors, ever accused him of that particular feature (which would perhaps have suggested limited intelligence and interfered with his depiction of a brilliantly diabolical schemer).

If anything, his forehead seems to have been quite gently rounded and a bit low.
Another aspect of his apparently having been almost- for lack of a better word,
and no insult intended- a bit dainty.

"It reports the discovery of a leaden coffin and skeleton at the ruins of the
church of St. Mary in Leicester. [See Images of the Historical Articles]

Is this anything to do with the coffin/horse trough?

As for "receding forehead", I've never heard that about Richard before!

Wowsers, that is interesting. So, how do we track down that story, and determine
if it was a hoax or reality? Lots of possibilities&..If it was found, the
unscrupulous could have removed the coffin, and simply put the bones back in the
ground. I cannot imagine that with an actually reported story, there is not some
corroboration or dismissal. Since there was a monument at the site where it was
supposed that he was thrown into the river, I suppose it could have been
dismissed, but I simply cannot imagine why.

The site where they found the coffin was St Mary's

As the team who found R3 said that he has been undisturbed for over500 years I find it totally implausible to believe that he had been found and reinterred.
Just think about what has happened and the detailed excavation, at no time did they say anything about the site being disturbed apart from H8 and a Victorian out house.
If it sounds too good to be true........

I know remains have been dredged up from the river in the past and pronounced to be those of Richard, and there was a skull claimed to be his that John A-H was goig to DNA test to rule it out. None of these things had any sensible provenance.
