Has anyone actually managed to get through this book? I¹ve tried twice and
it has defeated me!
Anyone have better luck?

Curious you should mention that Paul, I got about a third of the way through
before and then got horrendously STUCK.

Hi. Actually I did get through it and found it well worth while even
though I have a few issues with it (Hughes clearly loves his
alchemists, and almost has the reader spellbound into accepting that
people with pale faces and dark hair or autumn birthdays are bad
news). However, I did find it hard going. I got it with my Christmas
money and finished it in the spring, I think. At points I found I had
to go back and make notes to get it all in order in my head before
continuing. I actually found the front end of the book much harder
going than the end. I probably wouldn't have persevered except that
I had already noticed a few things in the department of symbolism or
Arthurian links that I wanted answers to. I would highly recommend
persevering as I do think it adds a huge amount to understanding of
the period. And it does get better.

Jessica,
And I was beginning to think it was me being dim:-)
It really is hard going isn¹t it?

Well...this is rather embarrassing - it was the book on Richard's religion I
got stuck on! I had no idea there was a separate book with alchemy. Please
could you tell me its title?

Arthurian myths and alchemy.
Beautiful to look at but so dense.
I have no idea why Laura has had a problem reading Michael Jones book,
unless it is because I¹m on record as loving it!<VERY BIG GRIN>
I¹ve read it twice, very easily both times. It is one of the most readable
history books I¹ve ever read.

BWAAAA..HAHAHAHAhahaha. That's reason enough, isn't it? I wouldn't be
caught dead liking anything you like, Paul, except Olivier's Richard
III. (ducks and runs)

I read it easily enough and agree thta it was readable. I just found
that I questioned enough of his conclusions, based on what I recalled
of the evidence, that I'm not willing to take any of them on faith
and I'm also not ready to devote considerable time to fact-checking,
so in that sense only I was stuck. (Although I suppose I should do so
before he comes to our AGM so that I can help make his weekend a
lively one.)

[I think I fat-fingered a previous reply into oblivion. Apologies if
I'm answering the same thing twice.]

I lent it to a friend who is a Richard sympathiser - she gave it me
back half way through, couldn't get on with it either. I found it
very easy reading and more interesting than many.
