Apparently Leicester Cathedral is holding flea market in their nave. And now there is this whole hoopla that people are concerned that Richard's tomb will be desecrated......I will upload an image on the file section.
Will Richard never be free of some sort of controversy?! Whatever star he was born under, it was positively an unlucky one:(
Btw, I am a neutral Yank.

The Church of England is now community friendly; it has to be to get folks in. So most churches are now cluttered up with notices and stuff for sale and kids' play areas (not a bad thing) etc etc. It's the new way. A flea market is a cheap antique market. The Antiques Road Show has been done from at least one cathedral, Ely, I seem to recall. H.

Do take a look at the pictures, if you haven't seen them. There are some on Google anyway. And "most churches" is not the same thing as "cathedrals" or "cathedrals housing a nation's king", and a one-off Antiques Road Show is very different from a three-times-a-year 'vintage fair' or 'flea market'. I look at the pictures and wonder if this could ever conceivably happen in York Minster, or St George's Windsor.

Well I visit a lot of big churches, including the odd cathedral and churches housing the famous dead and the practice is to make them more welcoming to the community, rather than places in which to whisper (some even have band and yoga practices). I can't speak for York because that's a high level tourist attraction and my guess is Windsor is a Royal Peculiar, but I actually think it's something we should welcome, after all churches in the medieval period were the centre of the community. It's probably influenced by the increased number of women now entering the priesthood. If I were buried there I'd like a bit of a hum going on round me - but that's just me. H.

I don't think three times a "year" is so terrible - once week would be a different story.
It wouldn't happen in St George's because that is like the Royals' "personal" church in a way and it wouldn't happen in York or Westminster Abbey because they get rammed with tourists and there's no room . I wonder if it will continue at Leicester anyway after Richard is buried.

I don't have a big problem with this so long as they're not doing it all the
time, so people still have a chance to go in and commune in silence. And
this is probably more like the Mediaeval scene Richard would be used to than
an empty space would be.
It would be better if they could hold the flea market in a hall at the side
instead of in the cathedral itself - but maybe the new tourist income will
neable them to build one.
