We have had an interesting debate recently concerning a film about Richard's great-nephew. Which portrayals have we enjoyed most?
I propose our own "Oscars" vote. Here are some nominations and I would welcome others. You might prefer
to wait until Rufus Sewell's CHARLES II has been broadcast.

HENRY VIII: Keith Michell, Sid James or Ray Winstone.
ELIZABETH I: Cate Blanchett or Judi Dench.
VICTORIA: Victoria Hamilton or Prunella Scales.

Those of you in the UK have seen presentations that may not have been
available in the U.S. I don't know that for certain, but I have "missed" all 3 of
the "Henry VIII" actors, have seen both Elizabeths, and have seen Victoria
Hamilton (_Victoria & Albert_) and Judi Dench as "Mrs. Brown" (Victoria). If
anyone is aware of the channels and times that "Charles II" will be shown in the
U.S., would you do us the favor of posting it here? The only Charles II I've
seen onscreen is the "fair" and charming Sam O'Neill in _Restoration_ (along
with all his cherished spaniels, of course), and I look forward to seeing this
new one. Thanks!

LML, Pam

What!!!!??? You haven¹t seen George Sanders? He was a wonderful Charles in
Forever Amber, and unlike Rufus Sewell, his hair didn¹t look like a wig!
The previews for Charles do not hold out much hope for a great series. It
will be all sex and scandal plus a bit of plague and fire. Oh and have I
alreayd mentioned it - bad wigs?:-)
As for Elizabeth, nobody has mentioned Glenda Jackson, for me the best Betty
Tudor ever.

Hi, Paul!
Darn, I missed that movie, which I'd always intended to see as a plain
romance, not knowing that Charles II had anything to do with it. George Sanders
seemed to be a ubiquitous actor (much like Basil Rathbone was), showing up
everywhere when you least expect it--I particularly remember him as Sir Brian de
Bois-Guilbert in _Ivanhoe_, as a character in _All About Eve_, and as the voice
of Shere Khan in Disney's animated _Jungle Book_.

I regret missing the Glenda Jackson TV series (it's available on DVD,
though), even though I saw the historically-inaccurate but pleasant-to-watch _Mary,
Queen of Scots_, with Vanessa Redgrave as Mary. (I recall Timothy Dalton and
Ian Holm, too!)

Oh, well, always more to see... if real life doesn't interfere with reel life!

Pam ;-)

My choices: Keith Michell
Glenda Jackson
Prunella Scales

I liked Timothy Dalton as Rupert, Dorothy Tutin as Anne Boleyn, and
Anne Stallybrass as Jane Seymour.

They have him wearing a wig which Charles never did. It was all his own
hair!
