"Dr Helen Foxhall Forbes, a lecturer in early medieval history at Exeter University who is not involved in the dig, told the Mail last night: Even if they do radio-carbon dating on the bones which reveals they are from the tenth century, we do not know if it is Alfred."
Any relation to Lin Foxhall do you think?

I don't suppose Richard was a male-line descendant of Alfred, was he, so his
mtDNA could be used to prove another king?

Yes! See "Richard's Ancient Ancestors" under "Files", which I contributed a few years ago.
However, general nuclear DNA is not of much use over 500 years, let alone a thousand. Good luck to anyone tracing a mtDNA or Y-chromosome link from Alfred.
