Bulletin/Letter from Dr Phil Stone

To those that do not receive the Bulletin...
"On 12 March an Adjournment Debate was held at Westminster Hall at the instigation of Hugh Bayley MP for York Central, who advocated that the Government should take control of the reburial issue. However in response the Ministry of Justice confirmed the terms of the Exhumation Licence that gives Leicester University the responsibility of making the decision and they have chosen Leicester Cathedral. We Now have to deal contructively with this reality in the interests of the whole Society."
"On 3rd March representatives from the Society met with the acting Dean and his staff and it was confirmed that the raised tomb option was not favoured by the Cathedral. It was agreed however that the following words would be added to the Cathedral's architects brief: 'The Richard lll Society has expressed concern about the way a ledger tomb or slab would be interpreted by their members'. The Acting Dean wrote to me after the meeting asking the Society for some 'research and rationale to back up their proposals'. This is currently being drafted and it will be a thorough measured and informative document taking the brief page by page and will clearly and concisely state why a tomb requires serious consideration and why it would be preferable to a ledger stone. We will publish this document in full on the Society's website."

Well, poop. I do not agree with the findings, but then it seems without a "higher power" stepping in, the decision is made.

Seemed a perfectly sensible letter to me; rational, restrained and constructive. The only pity is that other groups like the bloody Plantagenet Alliance, or whatever they're calling themselves today, seem hell-bent on playing up to a media caricature. This has the unfortunate effect of rubbing off on the Society, to the extent that one respectable broadsheet (sorry, but I forget which), recently referred to both as two competing "Richard III fan clubs".
