Richard's Parliamentary Rolls are being republished
Richard's Parliamentary Rolls are being republished
2013-03-31 19:48:14
Boydell Press is reissuing "The Parliament Rolls of Medieval England, 1275-1504," volume XV: Richard III. 1484-1485 & Henry VII. 1485-1487, edited by Rosemary Horrox. The price is $99.00 (65.17 pounds).
Expensive but certainly worth every penny for anyone who is serious about Ricardian studies. I'll have to save up. Maybe I can buy it for myself as a Christmas present!

You can get it for about $34 a year if you subscribe via the National Archives and follow their links - I did. I don't think you'd want it for more than a year to get what you need.

Carol responds:
I don't understand. It's volume XV of a very expensive set of books. (We would want only that volume.) How can you subscribe to a volume?
Or do you mean that with a one-year subscription to the NA (possibly not available outside the UK), you could print out or copy all you need? I'd rather have the book myself (*and* a subscription to access whatever I needed if I could get one). But I'm not that rich.

The one year subscription is via the NA but hosted by someone called sd-editions.com (Scholarly Digital Editions), which must be a US site as it charges in dollars. It has them all (Edward I to Henry VII) so you can read and print what you wish, both in the original and in translation. You can have a trial look for free. Just follow the online links from the NA

Thanks, Hilary. So it's separate from a regular NA subscription? Just realized that the NA subscription is probably free for UK citizens. I'll have to check it out some time when my workload is a little smaller. (Tomorrow is a total loss as I have both an ophthalmology appointment and an emergency dental appointment--an ancient mercury amalgam filling has finally started to crumble. Blame it on Easter candy, I guess!)

Best of luck for tomorrow! I don't have to pay an NA subscription, but I do if I buy anything online like a will (which is only about £3.65). NA Access to Archives is free and very good - they can't charge a subscription they don't know who you are.

Hm. Access is blocked to overseas accounts, then, because I have only limited access, and unfortunately the good stuff (fifteenth century) is inaccessible. I've tried several times.

Now that's strange because I searched for and bought a lot of stuff when in Aus. I've never registered for an account with them, just selected and went to basket and they've downloaded/posted. Can't say about the Parliament rolls but can you not go straight to the site of Scholarly Digital Editions and subscribe direct to them? I've checked - it cost me £24 for the year.

Well, yes, but Australia is withing the Commonwealth. We Americans are evidently excluded. I'll recheck when I get the chance, but as I said, I've tried twice to access the fifteenth-century archives and found my access blocked.

Hi Carol,
By-pass the NA and go straight to them:
http://www.sd-editions.com/
Then go to their online section, you'll see them listed and you can choose to subscibe. I'm sure you can have a 'free look' to see if it suits but I find them exceptionally good. You have the original and the translations by the likes of Sutton and Horrox. Would that they would do the same with the Privy Council records.
I'm afraid Ausralia's love affair with the UK has long gone, I would say the US love us far more despite the odd spat in the past. :)

Thanks for that link, which will come in handy once I get my finances in order. A lost filling with no dental insurance doesn't help!
I believe that Anne Sutton died in 2003 since the Ricardian published a volume of essays in her honor that year
http://www.ebay.com/itm/RICARDIAN-Journal-King-Richard-III-Society-2003-Anne-F-Sutton-/370663021503
and Rosemary Horrox is getting old.
http://www.hist.cam.ac.uk/directory/reh37@...
Unfortunately, I don't know of any Ricardian scholars of their caliber except Livia Visser-Fuchs, whose age I'm not sure of. The earliest book I can find by her was published in 1983.
