If the Bish's brother did indeed marry Agnes Bigod (and every source says he did) then Agnes is descended from John of Gaunt through her mother Anne Greystoke. Her great-grandmother is Cis's mother, Joan Beaufort who had been married first to Robert Ferrers.
That would certainly give Stillington a connection with the royal family.
The other Greystoke connections are also strong eg the Scropes of Masham.
Therefore, assumptions that Stillington came from a low level gentry family by both JAH and Hancock are certainly wrong unless something precipitated this marriage of his brother in the 1450s.
Hancock says Joan Cheddar is Stillington's aunt - (presumably Joan Hanham). I shall pursue that as well.
If it doesn't give you the elusive link with the Talbots so far it certainly gives you some good material about him which I hope I can verify when I get the wills.
When is your deadline? I could do with more time on this and I have to work Sat til Tuesday.
Hope this helps H.

This is very good. I need to assemble our evidence over the weekend.

There is also a Ferrers link to the Belknaps. I need to follow that up. As I said, the work is huge and I've just found a link between Stillington's mother's lot and the Ferrers/Beauforts

Stephen, I have found another link. Thomas Stillington's mother-in-law, Anne Greystoke was the aunt of the Elizabeth Greystoke who married Sir Gilbert Talbot (Eleanor's step-nephew)in about 1472. But again, just that bit too late to prove that he was 'known' to the family in 1461.

Apparently our Robert came into the manor of Great Edston through his mother in about 1458 so did that prove an upturn in his fortunes?

And Margaret Beaufort is double-linked through the marriages of her brother-in-law, Richard Stafford to Joan Cheddar (before John Talbort) and her sister-in-law, Catherine to John Talbot 3rd Baron Shrewsbury.

I begin to worry. How well did Stillington know Morton? It's just that the other executor to his will was Reggie Bray.

This is a real nest of vipers. I shall of course continue, but I'm not quite sure where I'm going.

You could do with the gedcom files to understand. H
