York Register of Names
York Register of Names

I just finished watching "The King" episode of Terry Jones' Medieval Lives,
wherein he covers Richard (beginning at 18:00 for about ten minutes). He
was mostly fair (except for the accession to the throne).
What caught my attention was when Jones went into the archives of York to
consult the town records regarding Richard's progress. Some city fathers
contributed £20 each to defray the cost of the King's visit, which Jones
pointed out was the equivalent at the time to a full year's wages for some
people then.
What stunned me was the record book Jones displayed that contained the
actual statement made by the York officials sorrowing over Richard's death.
Jones made a point of saying, and the camera highlighted it as well, that
every official had signed their name beneath the statement. I think it's
remarkable they had the stones to do that.
Richard lingered more than a week in York while on his progress and never
made it back before he died. I get the feeling, were it up to him, he never
would have left.
Up until now, I've felt that wherever his bones ended up was fine, as long
as the city and cathedral involved treated Richard with respect. Now, I'm
thinking maybe it's time this son of York went home.

Terry Jones' "Medieval Lives" with R3

Here's a link to the Terry Jones "Medieval Lives" episode where he talks about R3 -- for about 15 minutes of a 30-minute episode. He visits the city archives in York and shows two record books -- one recording the donations for Richard's progress; the other the statement York made about Richard's death, and the signatures attached to the statement.

Bless Terry Jones. Too bad he couldn't have got the part about "our"
Richard's "usurpation" right, though.

Certainly, wherever he ends up I'm sure his epitaph should be what York
wrote about him - "late mercifully reigning over us".

Or maybe Francis Bacon's lines, since they seem as true today as ever.
