Bertram Fields book Royal Blood - again
Bertram Fields book Royal Blood - again
2013-05-13 17:36:00
Has anyone successfully acquired the "endnotes" as they are called in my
edition of 2000? I see that the publisher ReganBooks was taken apart
(fairly acrimoniously from the sound of it) by Harper Collins. So there is
no longer a proper website for Regan Books. The Harper Collins site does
list Fields as one of their authors, but does not list *Royal Blood*.

I've written the law firm where he is listed as still practicing, but he's 81 years old now. Will let you know if I get a reply.
In the meantime, did you try plugging the original URL into the Wayback Machine internet archive (http://archive.org/web/web.php) and see if it archived the page?

Never thought of the Wayback Machine. Will try the URL I have (
www.reganbooks.com on the back outside cover). Nope, no go, it's been
controlled by Harper Collins & you only get an error message saying the
page cannot be crawled...

AJ What are the endnotes? My edition is 2006 and claims to be an updated one of the 1998 version. Haven't read it for a long time so you'll have to tell me where the reference is.

I assume they're what would otherwise be known as footnotes, the lack of
which several posters have lamented. In my edition, on the page with the
copyright information is the statement "Endnotes are available upon
request. Please write to ReganBooks, 10 E 53rd Street, New York NY 10022.

Thanks. My edition also has both "selected bibliography" & index. I
found, as did someone else recently, that there were places where a
footnote as to exact source would have been helpful.
Oh well, too bad, to lose work like that.

Thanks. My edition also has both "selected bibliography" & index. I
found, as did someone else recently, that there were places where a
footnote as to exact source would have been helpful.
Oh well, too bad, to lose work like that.

I swear that they're online somewhere and that I printed them out. Unfortunately, I'm always printing things and losing them, and I didn't bookmark the site. I've done several Google searches to relocate the site, but all I find are complaints about the absence of notes! Guess I need to take arms against a sea of paper. Will post if I find the URL. It's out there somewhere.

Here you are, as promised! I found the printed pages (all 23 of them), which, alas, contained no URL, so I searched for the transcriber, Judy Pimental, and found a dead URL from the old RIII American branch website, http://r3.org/basics/fields/endnotes.pdf. So I took that URL to the Wayback Machine and got http://web.archive.org/web/20111209141234/http://r3.org/basics/fields/endnotes.pdf
Ta da! I suggest that you print the notes in case the archived website disappears.

Yay, Carol! J So it really is true - once something is on the Internet, it's
out there forever!
Of course, it is possible to save them to one's hard disk, which is what
I've done.
What pray tell is the "Wayback" machine? The only one I've ever heard of
involves Mr. Peabody and Sherman. I take it this is different. Sounds handy
to know about - I've lost some webpages in the past that I'd like to be able
to recover!

Wow - thanks. Will definitely save to hard drive & probably print out at
work next week.
A J
P S - Wayback Machine is part of www.archive.org. BUT you have to know the
url of what you're looking for. If you plug that "address" in, the Wayback
Machine will give you options to look at the page in earlier incarnations,
by date. However, as I found out a day or so ago, there are ways of
disabling the Wayback Machine. It had "visited" & supposedly archived
earlier versions of the page for ReganBooks, which were not, however,
actually available any more through the Wayback Machine.

I did, as below. Mr. Fields' email address is included in case someone wants to thank him for the work he did. I think his assistant likely screens the email as the message I received came from her via this address.

I went over to the Richard III Society Forum on YahooGroups to let them know the endnotes couldn't be located. Someone on the group had done some sleuthing in the meantime and found them on the Wayback Machine here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20111209141234/http://r3.org/basics/fields/endnotes.pdf
So if Mr. Fields needs a copy for his records, there you go.
Thanks again for your time and trouble.

Carol responds, grinning:
Really, you should e-mail her with the link. Too bad you won't see her blush! The notes were originally posted on the American R III Society website, but seem to have been lost in the transition to the new site, along with the rest of the old "basics" section. Maybe it's still a work in progress, I hope?
