Hello Forum members,
I went to the Society of Antiquaries this afternoon for a talk on watercolours & hoped to see the portrait of our hero, & lo & behold it hangs in the Meeting Room so I could have a good look. It hangs bang next to one of big brother Edward. I am not sure you can detect a family resemblance if you look for facial similarities close up although they have hair of much the same colour. Part of a consignment of pictures for some noble to hang in a Long Gallery, I imagine. As a pair from a distance they look impressive. They are the most noticeable pictures apart from a much larger one of Mary I by Hans Eworth (?) because they are so much brighter. The cloth of gold they wear shows up well among pictures of foreign kings & aristocrats that all look blackish & there aren't any handsome ones IMO apart from the sons of York!
There is a dark portrait of sister Margaret on the other side of the room but she shows no resemblance to her brothers at all. Cleaning the picture might help a bit.
An unexpected bonus was finding the Bosworth Crucifix in the hallway - very evocative. Do we think it should figure in the reburial ceremony? JAH mentions it in his book "The Last Days of R3".
