Burial of Richard Grey?
Burial of Richard Grey?

Does anyone have any views / information concerning the reference in
HM433 to expenses of the Prince of Wales' household in September 1483
which record 46s 4d for "Lord Richard Berialle"? I have read some
interpretations which say this was the cost of Sir Richard Grey's
funeral following his execution. However, that was in July 1483 and
other payments in those accounts appear to include costs related
to "lord richard" during July and August. Is there any research
anyone is aware of that points to this "lord Richard" being young ex-
prince Richard previously Duke of York?

I can guess what you're hoping. However, I do think this is Lord
Richard Grey, unfortunately.
For other listers, this comes in a long entry relating to costs
incurred by Prince Edward's household, and is dated 2 September 1483.
There are 5 refs to "the Lord Richard", ie (in logical order rather
than order of appearance, since the expenses in this list are not in
any logical sequence):-
"xxxvij li xvj s xj d for thexpenses of my lord prince household &
the lord Richard from Saint Elynmasse to Midsomer Day [24 June]"
"vj s viij d to the Lord Richard's servants"
"xxj s vj d for the expenses of the Lord Richard's servants and the
horse at Middleham"
"xxij s iij d for the lord Richard Costes from middelham to Pountfret"
"xlvjs iiijd for the lord Richard Berialle"
Where I think we differ in interpretation is in the words after the
entry for the Middleham household costs. To quote the full context:
"xxxvij li xvj s xj d for the expenses of my Lord Prince household &
the Lord Richard from St Helenmass to Midsummer Day. xxxi li x d for
the expenses of the same house from Midsummer day to the iid day of
August. xxvii li xvii s ob for my said lord's household from the iid
day of August to the xxiid day of the said month. i s j d ob for my
said lord's household at Wetherby and Tadcaster..."
We know Lord Richard Grey was imprisoned at Middleham and brought
thence to Pontefract for execution. We also know that Richard Duke of
York was in sanctuary at Westminster till 16th June, and seen around
the Tower for some period afterwards. So this Lord Richard cannot be
him.
It seems to me that the Lord Richard is only specifically included in
the household expenses up to midsummer. From then on it is indeed the
same house, but only the Prince is ever mentioned.
