Re: Strange Encounter: In our new home of Prescott Arizona, down by the Hotel pool, I introduced myself to a couple with a very thick accent. They turned out to be from Scotland, vacationing in our American West, fascinated by Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. As we discussed History, I gathered up a ton of courage to announce I am an admirer of Richard III, who fought and ruled the Scots. The last time I did this was on the airplane to England in 1980 and I got into a big fight with a Scotsman after declaring my devotion to Richard. " Nasty bit of business he wrote"&.declared that Scotsman from 30 years ago. Our current Scotsman praised my interest in researching deeply into history and said he was not impressed with the intelligence of most Americans. I did agree that our educational systems are weak, but was relieved that our discussion didn't evolve into a heated altercation! I felt proud that I did have the courage to face the situation with positive comments about Richard and felt I had done what hundreds will do in the year ahead, everywhere. Loyalty CarolD

Lovely, cool Prescott! I envy you. Actually, though, Richard made a truce with the Scots which would have involved the marriage of his niece, Anne de la Pole, to the Scots (Scotch?) king's heir (which, of course, fell through after his death--Anne became a nun). There's a pair of very civil, even friendly, letters between Richard and the Scots king James, printed in Hammond and Sutton's "Road to Bosworth" (I think). You can almost hear Jamie's Scots accent.

Just thought I'd throw my name into the hat here. I'm a Scot but I've become quite an admirer of Richard III since his discovery in February meant an article was published on the BBC website outlining Richard's reign which sparked an interest which led me to join this forum where I've learned loads! The more I read about him, the more I like him. To be honest, I know a little bit about Scottish history but the history of England has always interested me more, it just seems much more colourful and exciting. Also, didn't Richard bring some peace between Scotland and England during his reign?

I've never been one of these Scots who have an anti English agenda and it sounds like the a fellow that you met in 1980 did. To be frank, it makes me cringe when I hear Scots who bleat anti English sentiments. I regard myself as British and see English people as my countrymen, we're Better Together.

Man, I knew Richard made peace with the Scots but it looked as if a Union of sorts was on its way! Bloody Weasel, why could he not just have stayed in France and kept his pointy beak out of English affairs?
