Has anybody bought & seen The King in the Car Park DVD & The Unseen Story DVD? I am unsure whether to buy them or not having seen the TV version.
Please advise!

A J Hibbard
I bought the DVD, and have re-watched the first show. Unfortunately, all
it did was make me swear never to watch it again - Dr Oops' insensitivity
sent my blood pressure sky high, even worse than on first viewing.

Haven't watched the second one yet on the DVD, although I did see it on
YouTube shortly after it was broadcast. So perhaps I could have spent my
money more wisely.

Does that help?

A J

You might check to see if it's still on You Tube before investing the money in a DVD. Parts are interesting, but Jo Appleby shocking Philippa Langley with her excited "He's a hunchback!" and then apologetically noting that, oops, I knocked a hole in his skull with my mattock do not make for pleasant viewing. The narrator, Simon Somebody from Horrible Histories, is rather clueless, but at least he seems sympathetic to Richard. It's mostly the Philippa and Jo show with only a few bits about the dig. The reconstruction of Richard's face is interesting, though.

"The Unseen Story," the second video, is better since it focuses on the scientists, but too late to redeem Jo Appleby in the eyes of some of us on this forum. It was on the official Richard III site of the Leicester team for awhile, if I recall correctly. It may still be there. Or it may be on You Tube as well.

Ethical or not (I know some posters don't approve), I'd watch it online and then decide whether I wanted my own copy if I were you. Sorry I don't have the URLs handy, but you can probably Google them or search this forum.

To me, the most useful things about the first show are as follows:

-- J A-H is featured prominently

-- The U of Leics staffers who were actually part of the dig freely and repeatedly admit that they didn't think they'd find Richard, much less right in the very spot J A-H said he would be. (Dr. Appleby even balked at the little ceremony that Philippa and J A-H performed as she wasn't absolutely sure at the time that the bones in the box were Richard's.)

It's going to be quite useful documentation against efforts to freeze Dr. Ashdown-Hill out of the picture.

Even the fact that Dr. Appleby conked poor Richard with her digging tool is useful, in a way -- it undermines the image of academic infallibility the U of Leicester admins (those who most strongly want to pretend that the whole thing was the U's idea all along) want to project.

But yes, the second show is probably more useful overall -- among other things, it corrects the myth pushed by the first show that there is only one living person running around who is descended from Richard's family.
