Went to Leicester today. Disgraceful really as it's only 20 mins up the road and I've not been for months.

It's festooned with flags tied to lamp-posts proclaiming it to be the City of Richard III. The flags show the statue against a grey background.

By some unintentional miracle we stumbled (if one can stumble in a car) into the centre and upon the site of the Greyfriars dig. The roads are now closed for 'excavation' which caused more than a few hiccups for us to reach our goal (which was nothing to do with Richard).

Just up the road, adjacent to the city centre, is the Cathedral. Don't expect St Mary's Warwick, or the normal 'cathedral' - just a largish unimpressive parish church (which is what it was) with a gravel and bit of garden frontage. It is situated opposite a large gravel public car park (obviously an ex building site) ugly but useful for shoppers and a number of older buildings which are 'To Let'. Forget that picture on the web where it appears to be in a sea of greenery, it's in a sea of masonry.

A sixties building (which could have been something to do with the uni?) had placards about the dig and the Society of Antiquities picture blown very large. No-one seemed to be going in there though.

So, nice that Richard has his own City:) Not sure about the ambience of the cathedral though. I asked hubby what he thought of it. 'What cathedral?' he said. He'd never even noticed it. Honest.

Oh dear!
