Richard the mini series

2014-03-26 19:38:22
Paul Trevor Bale
Have just started a web site and blog to introduce my screenplay to the
world and see if I can get some financing.
I know I had one that I let a few bits out on but this shows up using my
name so will hopefully get a few more hits!
I will add the odd scene to tease people, as it is all covered in
copyright.
I ask only that people do not choose to nit pick at my version of
Richard's story, remembering that it is my version, that it is exactly
as I have dreamed it, and that I am totally biased in his favour! :-)
I like to think of it as the anti dote to not only the Bard, but also
the likes of The White Queen nonsense!
Visit, invite your friends, and I hope like and enjoy.

It looks really good Paul. I have never seen a screenplay before, so it is
fascinating for that as well as the excellent writing/management. I cannot
imagine why anyone would want to nit-pick, and wish you every success with it,
truly.

It looks very good, Paul. Am I allowed to nitpick that I think Lovell usually has two 'ells' and am not sure when in history Francis was shortened to Frank - that did sound a little "modern" - but I think it reads really well and I wish you all the best for attracting funding and interest. Well done for sticking at it, too. Col

the rights were bought by someone an age ago, but nothing came of it
beyond that. As for 26 years being difficult, my script takes Richard
from birth to death, and my idea for the actor to play Richard will have
him play from 16 to 32. My choice could do it. Don't ask please, as I
won't tell.
Mr Armitage looks older than 32 already.
Sorry fans of RA, but be honest, he does. Great dwarf though :-)

RA is not anti-Richard. The opposite in fact. He is named after Richard
because he shares his birthday, and he has long wanted to portrait our king. I
think RA's father was a Richard fan. RA thinks he's probably too old
and too big, but he'd love to do it. That's how I understand him. I've seen him
being interviewed, and he does state his wish to be' Richard.
From Wiki: He [RA] was hoping to star in a
drama based on Richard III.
Armitage was born on the anniversary of the Battle of Bosworth Field, where Richard III was killed. "I believe it is a great
story, a socio-political thriller, a love story and a dynastic tragedy", he
said.[36]
He thinks the story has the potential to be told as a twenty-episode miniseries.
A script has been in development since 2010 and "a lot of people... are
interested [in producing it], but there is no one that will step on the
gas."[37]
Recently Armitage stated that he is still interested in the project, though he
has reservations that he might be too tall and too old to play Richard
III.
And no, I'm not in the RA fan club, I just like the stuff he does.

Carol responds:I know your feelings, Paul, and I'm sure you have someone in mind who's closer to Richard's age and height. Still, Armitage has a large fan base that would flock to the film to see *him* and Philippa's screenplay is bound to be favorable. I'd say the more plays and films about Richard from a favorable perspective, the better. No reason why you and Philippa need to compete. Why not cheer each other on?Carol

You're right, Weds. I just knew it was an important Ricardian date, but
didn't check.

If he's too old for Richard then he's also really too old for Clarence. He'd be brilliant as Warwick though.

Pamela, why do you think he is anti-Richard? He is definitely not. His father was a fan and he was named after Richard (his birthday is 22 August) and he's expressed a keen interest in Richard for quite some time

I looked him up, and while he plays a dwarf, he is 6' 2"! He is nice looking, but if he is anti-R3, then I am anti-Armitage, and he is Leiscester born! Shame on him!

It has been a fantasy of mine to see The Sunne In Splendour made into a film!! What a wonderful book! I was so emotionally drained after finishing, I was in a sort of fugue state for weeks!

I'm not Paul, of course, but in addition to his project,
I can think of at least three more. Someone (sorry, I
can't remember his name) wrote a pro-Richard play in
Shakespearean English. Also, there's the ongoing
collaboration between Phiippa Langley and Richard Armitage
(who plays Thorin Oakenshield in the Hobbit movies).
Apparently, that project is still in the early stages, but
we may yet get to see Richard play Richard: http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/home-news/hobbit-actor-lines-up-role-as-richard-iii.20080483
There were also plans at one time to make Sharon Kay
Penman's "The Sunne in Splendour" into a movie
(complicated as that would be given that Penman's long
book covers a span of twenty-six years, but I haven't
heard any more about it lately.

The Wiki piece is an exaggeration.
Philippa's screenplay I am given to understand is not a proper
screenplay yet, so is certainly not in development with lots of
producers wanting to do it. And why it needs a twenty parter is
beyond me. Mine is a six parter at most, probably four hour
episodes plus a final one of 90 minutes.
I have been struggling for at least ten years to get any producer
to even read my script! I am also concerned that Phillipa has been
writing with RA in mind. You cannot write a historical movie with
a particular actor in mind else the script becomes about him and
not the character. And when you are a head over heels fan it is
even more dangerous! That's why I waited until I finished mine
before I began thinking of who could play what part.
As for cheering each other on, one cannot go into any meeting
regarding finances demanding a certain actor play the lead, even
were it Tom Cruise, and I have never thought RA suitable, so that
rules out co-operation.
Also anyone wanting to dramatise Richard's story are now fighting
the fall out from The White Queen. One huge producer asked me why
I wanted to make a film about Richard when Ian McKellen had just
made one!
Now the question is, why when the BBC have just done it?

I'll second that. That's always been the book that I've wanted to see
produced about Richard.

Paul, I love the script! It's just as I picture Richard. I really hope it gets made. I would give you the money myself, if I had it :) What about RA as the Duke of York? That way he could add his weight to the project. I know he may be young for the part, but I would think it's easier to make someone look older than younger.Vickie On Monday, March 31, 2014 12:38 PM, Paul Trevor Bale <paul.bale@...> wrote:

Thank you Vickie. I do not really want
to go into RA again as I do not believe in casting also rans at
present. But had I been working on The Hobbit Peter Jackson would
have been badgered at every opportunity on behalf of the real
Richard story, badgered until he at least introduced me to his
money men! RA only ever speaks of how he'd like to play Richard,
which is a non starter for me, and anyone who seriously wants to
tell the story as it was! But then I have a real script ready to
show people, something one would need when plaguing Jackson with
the earnest desire to make a film of the story!
Am posting Barnet this weekend for those interested. Not Bosworth,
which I have been told by people in the business is really very
good! [Blow my own trumpet - one guy who has had 4 scripts made
into movies said it the best battle script he had ever read!
Written of course with blood and sweat and tears!]
I may also put up the fall of George of Clarence, but am not sure
yet.
If you visit, I hope you enjoy my view of that misty day in 1471.
