When I read these passages in "The King's Mother," by
Michael K. Jones and Malcolm G. Underwood, I
remembered earlier comments made about Henry's
behavior at Elizabeth's coronation in a thread here.
But the 'search archives' system isn't working for me
this morning, and I haven't found the posts on my own.
So I can't give direct credit to anyone who posted
about Henry at Elizabeth's coronation. Thanks for
your comments, which alerted me to these quotes.
These quotes interest me, because they suggest that
Lady Margaret may have given Henry VII the idea of
watching Elizabeth of York's coronation from behind a
lattice. It's equally possible that Lady Margaret
took the idea from Henry VII and continued with it
after his death. Either way, it's interesting that
Lady Margaret watched these ceremonies 'behind a
lattice.'
1 - This quote refers to Catherine of Aragon's
marriage to Prince Arthur:
"On 14 November the king, queen and Margaret stood
with others 'in secret maner' in St. Paul's for the
marriage ceremony 'in a closet latised.' [Footnote 31:
Chronicles of London. Ed. C. Kingsford (Oxford 1905)
248; G. Kipling, The Triumph of Honor (Leiden, 1977)
72-95]
2 - This quote refers to Catherine of Aragon's
marriage to Henry VIII:
[My summary: On June 23, when Henry VII and Catherine
of Aragon went from the Tower of London to the palace
at Westminster, Lady Margaret watched the procession
from a house hired for her in Cheapside]
"Here she waited, as she had witnessed the queen's
coronation in 1487, from a secluded vantage point
'behind a lattice,' attended by her waiting-women. It
was a position which concealed her part in the
establishment of the dynasty."
