The Great Big Richard III Magical Mystery Tour
The Great Big Richard III Magical Mystery Tour

Apologies for the silly title ;)
I've been making vague travel plans to England for Richard's reburial, and these vague plans have slowly grown to epic proportions: in my (still vague) dreams, I'd like to do a veritable Great Big Richard III Magical Mystery Tour and visit a whole bunch of places of Ricardian interest. I'm not a big traveller because of my fear of flying, so it would be great to combine it all into one trip.
However, even my vague plans are running into vague problems (it seems awfully difficult to find proper bus routes to Middleham, for one thing) and this is already making the neurotic traveller in me nervous. On top of being afraid of flying, I'm also afraid of catching wrong trains and buses and getting lost somewhere in the Yorkshire Dales without a hotel in sight...
I wonder (a) how many of you are planning to go to Richard's funeral, and (b) might there be any such bus tour plans (and/or other events) for Ricardians who are coming to Richard's funeral?
Basically, I'm hoping that someone will organise my Great Big Richard III Magical Mystery Tour for me, so that I can just hop on a bus and enjoy the sights ;)

Check out the Ricardian Travel link on the r3.org site -
http://www.r3.org/richard-iii/ricardian-travel/ricardian-tours/ there are
annual tours organised - perhaps one of the organisers can tell you if they
plan something special for the re internment - whenever it may be!
I'll be travelling from Canada - but am an ex-pat so kinda know my way
around - however a good point you've made is 'will there be a Society
gathering for members of the society travelling for the event.' Hope so!

That's very interesting - thank you! I'm actually not in the USA but in Scandinavia, and I'm a member of the UK Society, so I'm not sure if the tours organised by the American branch are intended for the likes of me...? But as Richard's reburial is such a momentous occasion, I'm hoping there might be something organised for Ricardians coming from all over the world...
I've even considered dragging some friends of mine along with me, in order to feel less lonely and awkward on the journey. But how do you convince non-Ricardians that a bunch of castle ruins are THE places to visit in Britain, I have no idea...

Lol Doug - pubs should work! I too have a non Ricardian travel companion,
however she has become more & more intreagued with the whole debate & even
found herself defending R3 when an uninformed oik claimed he murdered the
Princes! At least I know she must be listening to me at times!
Pansy, the USA tours start in the UK at a central point (this year they
started off in Manchester) - so as far as I know they are not just for our
American Cousins... I'd contact one of the organisers - see what they may
have planned...

Are we all assuming that those not on the committee will get an invite
to the ceremony? How will tickets be handed out? Will it be worth
travelling long distances to find oneself standing outside the cathedral?
I am dubious.
And that from a man fanatical about Richard and desperate to be a part
of the re-interment!

Re: The Great Big Richard III Magical Mystery Tour

Paul, you are not the only person who would love to be there, I am sure. As soon as the date for the re-interment is published people will rush to book rooms & travel tickets. I have decided to watch the TV coverage if possible or buy the DVD & then visit when the media 9 days' wonder dies down. The Dean of Leicester mentioned in a letter he wrote to me that they were talking to broadcasters about televising events & that DVDs were part of the discussions but that details were not yet settled.

Re: The Great Big Richard III Magical Mystery Tour

At the recent Australasian Convention we had a show of hands who wanted to go to the reburial and about 60% of those present put up their hands. It seems to me that if they want to accommodate everyone who would like to be there, Richard would at least to be reburied in an Olympic stadium.
Who will decide in any case who gets to be there? I am with Paul, I would love to be there, but to fly half way around the world to watch it from the outside, does not sound like a worthwhile option.

Who will decide in any case who gets to be there? I am with Paul, I would love to be there, but to fly half way around the world to watch it from the outside, does not sound like a worthwhile option.

Yes its all very disappointing - I've started some tentative enquiries on
who may be allowed to attend - you'd think Members of the Society & those
who helped fund the dig would get some kind of consideration - or am I just
being optimistic! I hate the circus of it all...

Re: The Great Big Richard III Magical Mystery Tour

No doubt it will be like all these things. The bigwigs will get the best seats and the foot soldiers (oftenliterally - I am thinking of events to commemorate military events) are lucky to get a standing ticket.
But you know what I don't care. I will go along afterwards and pay my respects away from all the hullaballo. Maybe some of us can get together and organise to meet up, visit Richard and have dinner together - and talk about him all evening long!

Carol responds:
I have even vaguer plans--to go to England some time in 2014 to celebrate Richard, along with my sister and cousin, who know nothing about him except what I've told them. If I were going alone, I could probably plan the tour (limited by a tight budget), but when the planning involves three people (four counting a grandson who's going along for the ride), it's a real headache. I'm not even sure of the best time to go. Probably *not* August, given the weather.
I do want to see Leicester, Middleham, and York--maybe Fotheringhay--but that's as much as I've "planned."

Re: The Great Big Richard III Magical Mystery Tour

Good idea Liz...I had been thinking along lines of going and paying my respects when it is more quieter.....that way you will possibly get the chance of lingering for a while instead of feeling pressurised to hurry along...Of course it would be wonderful to be there on the day but I doubt it may be possible...

See, I'm pathetic enough to do exactly that. Even if it's raining outside the cathedral ;) I experience most things at a remove: I watch them on TV or (more often) read books about them. Indeed, I'm a very nerdy, bookish person, so even many of the normal, nice little things that people experience in their lives I've only experienced at a remove. I'd really like to experience this one historic occasion first-hand - especially as it's one that means a lot to me.
The idea of attending the service itself has honestly never even occurred to me. I'd just like to be there, to be part of the whole thing... a very small part, but still. I'd like to be able to say that I was there to see the funeral procession of a 15th-century king. Even if it weren't Richard, it's mind-blowing to think about. Like a time machine.

LOL, Doug! When I was a young girl, we were in London with a couple of my mother's friends, and we went to see the Tower (at my insistence, I might add). Literally the first thing those friends asked when we got in was 'where's the Tower Pub?' Alas, there being no pub on the premises, they seemed thoroughly bored by the whole thing, and only got excited when they saw a gigantic golden bowl and started speculating how much punch might fit in. But once we left the bowl behind, they started sighing dramatically again, and wondering out loud why nobody had seen the splendid business opportunity that a Tower Pub would be.
Never travelled with those friends again. Wonder why ;)

I could really get there just for the day although it would take me about 3 -4 hours each way since I would have to go by train. I would love to stay overnight and meet up with others but yes I think that as soon as the date is announced, rooms will be booked out within a very short time and I'm also pretty sure that the prices will magically rocket for the night before and after the funeral!

Pansy, you're not pathetic and I don't think you're nerdy either, maybe just a bit introverted. - as am I, until I get a couple of glasses of wine down me then I'm a different person.
Actually watching the Procession "would" indeed be something very special and maybe yes, worth it just for that. Easier for me of course as I'm already here in the UK.

P.S. there's nothing long with being bookish, shame more people aren't!

See, I'm pathetic enough to do exactly that. Even if it's raining outside the cathedral ;) I experience most things at a remove: I watch them on TV or (more often) read books about them.

Probably something like this:
http://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/texts/pastoral/funeral/memorialservice.aspx
And, of course, the service will have Roman Catholic elements as well.
I was going to say that I hope they use Rite One (the old-fashioned wording) as somewhat more appropriate to a fifteenth-century king, but it turns out that only the American Episcopal Church has the two rites. Apparently, the Anglican Church has retained the prayer book from Elizabeth I's reign, but I can't find a memorial service in it, which may be why they've resorted to a modernized version.
You can find the Book of Common Prayer online here: http://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/book-of-common-prayer.aspx
I suppose the Roman Catholic prayer book is also online, but I don't know what it's called and am too lazy to look it up.

As one who goes to both faith churches regularly I think you'll find very little difference. There are some differences in ritual, eg in Catholic funeral services the priests wear a purple stole and there is a cross on the coffin throughout the service (both rather nice touches). I've only ever heard Latin in a sung Kyrie at the Holy Cross (who do Latin masses still). Otherwise both Anglican and RC tend to have drifted towards Cranmer's original and modified beautiful prayerbook, which has been somewhat updated to embrace more modern language. I still love 'Dearly beloved' to start a marriage service but it's very infrequently heard now (again at the Holy Cross).
I would guess it is likely to be a multi-faith memorial service in keeping with Leicester. If you watched a certain politician's state funeral recently you will see there were representatives of several churches there (including RC and American) and it was conducted by the Anglican Church, although she was a Methodist. What will be interesting is who conducts it. It should after all be the Archbishop of Canterbury, Bourchier's successor, but my guess is the Bishop of Leicester with perhaps a representative of the RC Church in attendance. I believe Prince Charles has already he will change the status of his role as Head of the Church of England to acknowledge our multi-faith society when he accedes to the throne.
