Sorry - can't resist. Here are 4 commissions of the peace for
Northumberland. I've been copying & specifically paying attention to the
last commission ordered by Edward IV, and then any during the reigns of
Edward V, & Richard, & the first by Henry VII.
Here are the 4 for Edward IV, Edward V, & Richard. I'd be interested in
comments. Of note
* Edward IV hadn't seen fit to order a new commission since 1475, & in fact
the list is headed by George, duke of Clarence. As I'm working through
alphabetically, this is the first county to have had its last commission
under Edward IV at such a remove.
* Not all counties had commissions ordered during Edward V's short reign.
* It fits the basic pattern for all the others I've looked at so far for
Richard's reign, a commission ordered about 26 Jun & another one after the
Buckingham rebellion, on or about 5 December.
What I find fascinating about this particular set of commissions is that
the personnel, allowing for the changes at the "top," are so stable. Not
much happening in Northumberland?
The numbers are the sequential numbers assigned in the 2 volumes of the
Calendar of the Patent Rolls. I had to go back to the earlier volume to
find the last commission of Edward IV's.
