Dear all

Sorry for mass email to one and all but just to let you know that Leicester Cathedral has released the tomb design for Richard today (see link below):

For those that have already called me about it this evening, I would like you to know that I had nothing to do with the design, and indeed I am greatly saddened and disappointed by it. It does not represent, in my opinion, the final resting place for the last warrior king of England – a medieval warrior king.

With sincere apologies to all that like it. I've had so many calls this evening that I thought it best to email you all.

Hope you understand.

I have to say that I agree with Philippa regarding the Leicester Cathedral tomb design. It looks like a breeze block and I must say that I am not too keen on the white rose on the floor. The Society design for the tomb was so much better. Why can't the Society have their say on the tomb design? After all if it had not been for the Society, Philippa and John, Richard would never have been found. The Society has been keeping his memory alive for decades and that in turn encouraged Philippa and John to do the outstanding work that enabled the discovery of Richard's remains. Leicester would not be in the exceptional circumstances that they find themselves in. I think the honourable thing for UofL and the Cathedral to do would be to use the Society's tomb design. I say this as someone who has always been in favour of Richard's reburial in Leicester.

I emailed the CFC for E & below is a quote from the reply I got, having copied my email to the Rt Rev David Menteith, Dean of L. Richard Paterson replied on his behalf.
It must be worth sending in comments before the end of October. I was taken in by the first image showing the tomb design from above. Seen sideways the outline of the petals is more visible as is the lack of connection between the centre of the rose & the piece of cheese/nougat/breeze block, whatever it reminds you of. Certainly not the king.
Jan.

"The design which has been submitted to the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England is the result of intensive discussion with many parties, including the Richard III Society, and takes a wide range of factors into consideration. We have released a number of images of the tomb and the setting in which it will lie, but to fully appreciate what is designed and why it would be necessary to read the complete submission. This is available on the diocesan websitewww.leicester.anglican.org.

Any comments on the design should be submitted to the CFCE, who are due to make their decision by the end of October."
