Hi Carol,

Thanks for the clarification. I was a little surprised that you did not take account of the remainder of the article by Roth, because it is very illuminating. Chrimes mentions it in a footnote where he states that Brampton was later taken into Henry's service and may have been the source of the evidence against Warbeck.

On the specific subject of the payment from Richard to Brampton, I am surprised that nobody has put 2 and 2 together from the work of JAH on the Portuguese marriage plans.

The activities of Edward Brampton as an ambassador / negotiator with Portugal coincide with his receipt of his pension. These activities are missing from the Roth article. Not surprisingly since they seem to have been kept secret.

From JAH's work we know that Richard's negotiations for a Portuguese marriage predated Anne's death. The paper trail he found begins weeks previously, and we could speculate that informal negotiations were going on before that. I have no doubt that Richard would not have wanted these to be generally known about.

So Brampton was performing perhaps the most important task he could for Richard, namely ensuring the possibility of an heir and doing it secretly.

This also undermines the idea that such a payment must be connected with Brampton's involvement with one of the Princes.

Kind regards
David

Hi, David. Just a brief response. Apologies for top-posting and not snipping. First, I'm not sure why you mention Wells. Second, I didn't mention the turmoil in Burgundy as that's not my area of expertise and not relevant to my post, which is concerned with the secret correspondence between Richard and Margaret, which would not have required such secrecy had it involved military aid and would, no doubt, have been addressed to Maximillian rather than Margaret had it involved military matters. Third, I provided the link only as a source for the payment to Brampton, not as an indication that I agree with the authors theories regarding his involvement with Perkin Warbeck. Sorry if that was unclear.

Carol
