VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
Tony Robinson sifts the facts from the fiction about one of Britain's most maligned monarchs, Richard III. Did he really murder his two young nephews before usurping the throne?
I can't view this, so I don't know if the content is pro or con.

Re: VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
Thank you for sharing this link.I have always liked Tony Robinson and his style of presenting. In the video he says lots of good things about Richard until Edward iv's death. Then it's a bit hit and miss...various conclusions/opinions seem to believe that Richard did kill the boys because Edward iv was illegitimate and that Richard was the rightful King.So parts of it were good and other parts a bit out of order.Very interesting though. If Tony does think that Richard was a murderer then it's probably best he didn't present the search for Richard.I find it hard to equate that Richard is thought no worse of than those of his times. He seems to me to be the best of all and therefore was a threat to those who did not aspire to the same ideals.Long may he rest in peace.x

Re: VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
figure it out, [ him as Baldrick apart that is]. His documentaries have
always been more about Tony Robinson than the subject matter they
purport to be about.
His Richard film was rather badly researched I thought, and he seemed to
care little of him.
Why make a film about something unless you are passionate about it?
Look at Mary Beard's enthusiasm for all things Roman, or Michael Woods
and the Anglo Saxons?
With Tony Robinson I always feel it is just a good excuse for a nice
jaunt somewhere for him and his crew.
I can imagine a past conversation. Edward IV illegitimate? Who cares?
Well imagine who would be king if he had been? Modern descendant is an
Australian Tony. Oh great, we can get a trip to Australia out of it!
Count me in!

Richard Liveth Yet!
Re: VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
Sorry you think that way about Tony.I have always enjoyed both his acting roles and his presentations and I'm sure his enthusiasm for archeology is genuine.
It would be interesting if he and the society could combine forces and do a documentry on the life of Richard 111...perhaps he might be a bit more favourable if he was more aware of the research that the society is doing.
Mary and Michael are both amazing historians and presenters and I have always enjoyed their work too.
long may they all continue to entertain.

That's interesting Hilary. I heard some time ago that JAH said Time Team turned it down because they didn't think they would find anything in three days. From: Hilary Jones <hjnatdat@...>
Come folks it's Sir Tony now!:) I have to say although he's arrogant he is quite watchable but how much is his own knowledge is another thing. I loved the 'guy in the jumper' who sadly died quite recently. I do think Time Team might have put a bit more money into the dig, but as they explained, the time constraints from Leicester Council were too tight - one now wonders why?!! H.

Yes it's in the Jones/Langley book Pamela. I think Philippa approached them more than once but it was too difficult a speculation for them and the Council was being difficult about the carpark. How I bet they regret they turned it down. H.

Re: VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
I sort of see both sides in the Tony Robinson debate. I enjoy him as a presenter, but I have heard that he behaves like a big star on set, turning up late and pushing himself into every shot.
Tony Robinson once did a programme with Mike Jones on the Edward IV-was-a-bastard-and-the-real-king-is-driving-a-forklift-truck-in-Australia theme, and it sounds from previous posts as though he's taken Mike Jones' interpretation of Richard wholesale. I think Mike Jones's view of Richard's personality has a lot going for it, but I do find his idea that Richard and his mother would have felt compelled to purge the bloodline by killing Edward IV's ill-begotten sons pretty far-fetched.

Re: VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
All I can go on is his work in Time Team ,the Black Adder series and his recent historical walks and as such he always comes across as an affable enthusistic amateur with a long love of history. When the Time Team programme was at its best it seemed wonderful to me and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I haven't heard about the Australian programme nor the Mike Jones you were referring to.......for a moment until I managed to find him via Google....I had a vision of Tony touring Australia with Mike Jones from The Clash!I don't know any of your Mike Jones opinions regarding Richard except the one you have related and I agree with you totally.I am so glad that Mike stood up to parliament regarding the archaeolgy there and for his valuable contribution to modern archaeolgy .Richard's family seems to have been a good and happy one until Edward and George started to disagree. If their father had been around it wouldn't have happened as he would have been king.
Why does there always have to be some outrageous reason/idea for the events around Richard and his times?I enjoyed Aneurin Barnard and Faye Mayer's portrayal of Richard and Anne when Richard proposed to Anne in The White Queen. But I wasn't particularly happy about the witchcaft scenes and I haven't yet watched all of the series because when it came to Richard and Anne becoming king and queen I didn't want to see him shown in the usual format of Richard having murdered his nephews(not having read Philippa Gregory's novels).Although the ending was very upsetting it was very movingly portrayed.
Best wishes

Sorry but I do find Sir Tony (who was knighted for his political views) more than a little self-important, considering he has no credentials at all compared with Oliver, Beard, Wood etc. I've yet really to find anyone who likes him. Now if we could convert Michael Wood .......... :) H Sorry!!

Re: VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
By Mike Jones I mean Michael K. Jones of "The King's Mother" (on Margaret Beaufort, cowritten with Malcolm Underwood), "Bosworth 1485: The Psychology of a Battle" and "The King's Grave" (cowritten with Philippa Langley). He is the person who discovered the Duke of York got back from the Pontoise campaign much later than previously thought, making the story that Edward IV was conceived in adultery very much more plausible. Tony robinson picked up on the Edward IV thing, and they did a programme on the evidence for Edward IV's bastardy and tracing the true Yorkist heir - a republican descendant of Clarence's daughter named Michael Hastings - down to present-day Australia. Sadly Michael Hastings died last year though he left a large family.

Tony Robinson's film on Shakespeare's other hatchet job Macbeth was frankly a disgrace!

Re: VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
I never knew that.I was probably too busy caroussing in those days lol. Here's hoping he may do a series about Richard in the future.
Today I have read a bit about Charlemagne and just caught the second half of Michael Wood's episode about Alfred and those of his family who succeeded him.Richard certainly had a lot of ancestors whom to emulate.Such a pity his reign ended so soon.I am sure that there will eventually be the definitive version of Richard's life.Richard Armitage has had a life long passion about Richard 111.Perhaps he and Philippa Langley may get a project started in the near future.
best wishes

Sorry, Paul, I didn't know about the Tony and Mike trip to Australia.I thought it was a joke example you were using and I haven't seen or known the programme about Macbeth.
Sorry Marie,I didn't realise that's who you meant.I rely on google and wikiepedia to try and check who's who.Good to know that there are direct descendants belonging to George as well as Edward.
best wishes to you both

Re: VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
I actually do like Sir Tony, and yes, he has no credentials, that's why he's so great. One should never forget he's an actor and when he does these "presentations" he just plays some kind of Balderick, the layman with the cunning plan that falls through. In Time Team, he's the village idiot that bounces around farfetched ideas disproved by the specialists. He never claims to be very knowledgable (and I think he's probably far more up to things than he leads out to be). Also, being an actor, Shakespeare is like a God to him and everythin he wrote was gospell ! So if his views on Richard III can be discarded. Luckily, not being a native English speaker, I never fell for much of Shakespeare's stuff, to me it feels outdated (though I did like the Michael Woods documentary on him - which did convince me at last he did write his own plays, something I didn't believe before Woods).
Actually, I think we should be glad Time Team didn't do the dig at the car park. I always dislike the three day constraint which leaves little to no room to doing thorough research. Also, I think they go in too fast (unfortunately, that what also happened at the car park dig). I do love Time Team, but by 2012 it had degraded so much. They had to dig bigger trenches, just to fit Phil Harding's ego (or maybe that's what I think because he's such a bad actor and not that good in playing his role). I mean, when they replaced Helen Geake with that girl - who was supposed to be a professor or something like that and ended up taking over the role of Tony Robinson . It was so awful that the great Mick Aston (I am very saddened by his death, which I only learnt from this group yesterday - new member after seeing the DVD on the Car Park Dig). Also loved Corenza, Helen, John and Stuart. I've learned a lot from Time Team - didn't they do Bosworth?
Well, sad thing is that now I know I shouldn't ask Time Team to come and look for the grave of Richard's sister Margareth in my home town of Mechelen. They know she's burried in the church of the Friars Minor (Franciscans), but they don't know where. You don't need Henry VIII to pillage churches, French revolutionists will do pretty much the same (the building is still standing though !!!)
Thanks,
Marc

I think Mike Jones's view of Richard's personality has a lot going for it, but I do find his idea that Richard and his mother would have felt compelled to purge the bloodline by killing Edward IV's ill-begotten sons pretty far-fetched.

Indeed, welcome to the forum!
How interesting that you live in Mechelen. I have only visited it once, but I liked it very much, and of course it is so connected with Yorkist history.

Vestments?
Re: VIDEO: Tony Robinson Fact or Fiction: R3 & Princes in the Tower
first my apologies for hijacking this thread, I haven't seen the Tony Robinson tv-show (and unfortunately am unable to find it on the net).
Well, if ever you have the opportunity of visiting Mechelen (or Mechlin), let me know maybe I can give a guided tour. Mind you, most of the town was destroyed at the end of the XVI th century (and it wasn't rebuild as most things had already moved to Brussels).
I hope you did visit the palace of Margaretha of York (or what remains) and were able to enter it. These days it's the town theatre, haven't heard of many plays played there, but as I kid I often entered it to see movies for children. If you did and crossed the street you would have seen the connection with the Tudors : the Palace of Margaretha of Austria - where two of Henry VIII wives were educated in the art of courting (whatever that meant at that time). The Chapel/Church of the friar minors is opposite the entry of the Cathedral. Only learned Margaretha of York is buried there when they discovered the body of Richard III.
Cheers,
Marc

Spot on Marie. I particularly liked Jones's take on Cis as family matriarch (but not the last bit as you say) and Richard's regard for his father whose name he bore. And I have to say I was in Aus when the who was the real king documentary came out and TR did manage to engage a lot of people in the York story over there. Re: Vestments?
You might contact Paul Bernardino here:
http://monasterygarments.blogspot.com/
He is a Catholic monk in San Francisco specializing in making genuine holy order garments for the members of current orders, as well as for medieval/renaissance reenactors. He made a 15th-century Camerlite nun's habit a couple of years ago for a friend of mine, and I can vouch for his knowledge and the quality of his work.
Please be aware if you contact him that he can be a bit eccentric, crunchy and terse, but he's definitely a valuable source if you want accurate information.
