Useful Google alerts for research
Useful Google alerts for research
I hope no-one minds me posting about this? But I have a list of research search engines that I thought might possibly be useful to some other people? I have not used them for several years, so I have just gone through each link to make sure it is still active and is the current correct web address.
I'm not sure how well-known this one is, but Google has a very useful alert system. It will send an email to any address you want, as often as you want, listing any new webpages it finds with your search terms in it:
https://www.google.com/alerts
So if you were looking for documents about the Princes, you would type in:
documents "Princes in the tower" (or whatever you thought was best).
Currently Richard's portrait is a very popular topic, so leaving an alert for:
portrait "Richard III"
would alert you to any new references. Google indexes many obscure research sites and research papers online.
More sophisticated (but not necessarily finding any more pages) are Link Thrall and Query Server:

http://queryserver.dataware.com/
A sort of search engine for search engines is Search Engine Watch:
http://searchenginewatch.com/page/guides
If you click their link for "Specialty Search Engines" and then "Other Specialty Services" you can find links like the Journalist's Toolbox:
http://www.journaliststoolbox.com/
I wondered if this Society, or individuals from the group might want to register on this one? Firstly it might help correct popular misconceptions in the media, but secondly, I think some of them pay you as well...
Finally two odd ones that I quite like:
I have to mention Dogpile:
http://www.dogpile.com/
and Search Engine Colossus:
http://www.searchenginecolossus.com/
This lists country- and language-specific search engines.
I hope they might be some help!
