One of the New Dictionary of National Biography's Lives of the Week for this week is Richard III's ancestor, Henry II (Henry Fitzempress). Nonmembers can access it until next Wednesday (March 12) at http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/lotw/2.html. If you're interested, you can copy it to your personal files without violating copyright law. I haven't had a chance to read the article yet, but if the funeral effigy is any indication of what Henry II, the first Plantagenet king, looked like, he was quite a handsome man.

I loved those two! He seems to have had loads of illegitimate kids so
she was undoubtedly right.
