Suitable links have been thin on the ground for the last couple of days
(well, virtually nonexistent as being worth posting) but this one, if brief, is
certainly of interest to us.
http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/main-topics/general-news/hunt-set-to-begin-for-richard-iii-s-favourite-york-haunt-1-6518317
and then there's this. http://www.gloucestercitizen.co.uk/Reader-letter-Richard-III-killer-king-did-just/story-20845201-detail/story.html
Someone's view of Richard's reign and legacy.
And I'm going to see the exhibition again on Thursday just to be certain
I didn't miss anything the first time. And I've got until the 30th to maybe take
one last look. I'll be bereft when it leaves!

It's very long, very well written, and is an eye-witness blog about the Judicial
Review. I apologize for the mentions of Max Clifford's appendage, but the blog
itself is definitely worth reading. IMHO anyway.

Interesting quotes from a letter to the Leicester Mercury. The second

Well, I'm not quite sure about this review in The Independent. It is not
balanced. Will Gore has no sympathy for the emotional' Ricardian side of
events, describes the Leicester archaeologists as pragmatic' (read sensible and
worthy), and almost writes Richard? Richard who? Oh, him. The bloke invented by
Shakespeare and those great Tudor guys. After reading this review, I was left
with more of an impression of Mr. Gore than the book he was writing about. He
criticises the book, praises the book, and in the end sides with archaeology in
general. Which, to me, isn't the point. This was no ordinary archaeological dig,
no matter what the Leicester team thought. They didn't look beyond the end of
their collective nose. Yet they are the heroes, Richard III wasn't worth a t-ss,
and his supporters are soppy, maybe even certifiable. Huh? Oh, well. If I were
Mike Pitts, the author, I'd be bemused. I'll be buying the book. Good luck to
you, Mike.

Well, I'm not quite sure about this review in The Independent. It is not balanced. Will Gore has no sympathy for the emotional' Ricardian side of events, describes the Leicester archaeologists as pragmatic' (read sensible and worthy), and almost writes
Richard? Richard who? Oh, him. The bloke invented by Shakespeare and those great Tudor guys. After reading this review, I was left with more of an impression of Mr. Gore than the book he was writing about. He criticises the book, praises the book, and in
the end sides with archaeology in general. Which, to me, isn't the point. This was no ordinary archaeological dig, no matter what the Leicester team thought. They didn't look beyond the end of their collective nose. Yet they are the heroes, Richard III wasn't
worth a t-ss, and his supporters are soppy, maybe even certifiable. Huh? Oh, well. If I were Mike Pitts, the author, I'd be bemused. I'll be buying the book. Good luck to you, Mike.

Henry didn't like turncoats. He benefited from them, but didn't trust them
one jot. And rightly so, IMHO. If a man will turn his coat once, he is likely to
do it again. Our Enery was not one to forgive and forget such things. He didn't
feel safe enough. I hope he NEVER felt safe, not for a single day. He stole the
throne and was responsible for the murder of an infinitely better man. So boo
hiss to all those who did the dirty on Richard. A knighthood is too good, come
to think of it. Henry must have had a few too many when he made that decision.
<g> (Hmm, can't imagine him sozzled, somehow. I'll bet he was a
sniggerer.)

Well, I'm not quite sure about this review in The Independent. It is
not balanced. Will Gore has no sympathy for the emotional' Ricardian side
of events, describes the Leicester archaeologists as pragmatic' (read
sensible and worthy), and almost writes Richard? Richard who? Oh, him. The
bloke invented by Shakespeare and those great Tudor guys. After reading
this review, I was left with more of an impression of Mr. Gore than the book
he was writing about. He criticises the book, praises the book, and in the
end sides with archaeology in general. Which, to me, isn't the point. This
was no ordinary archaeological dig, no matter what the Leicester team
thought. They didn't look beyond the end of their collective nose. Yet they
are the heroes, Richard III wasn't worth a t-ss, and his supporters are
soppy, maybe even certifiable. Huh? Oh, well. If I were Mike Pitts, the
author, I'd be bemused. I'll be buying the book. Good luck to you,
Mike.

He didn't like ditherers either - those who couldn't quite make up their mind. Now Edward was brilliant with them; give them a bear hug (or a knighthood) and he'd won them over. Poor old Richard didn't like ditherers either, but then if a man was loyal to a cause how could he hesitate? What never fails to amaze me is how our Henery tolerated the arch-ditherer of all ditherers, Mr T Stanley. Ma must have been powerful indeed. And yes, quite a few of those who plotted against Richard ended up on the scaffold themselves when they'd decided the grass wasn't greener. Pity a King had to die to prove it. feel safe enough. I hope he NEVER felt safe, not for a single day. He stole the

Henry didn't like anyone very much, seems to me.. He was a miserable
b-gg-r! <g> But then, after all was said and done, and his bony rear end
was firmly parked on the throne, he wasn't happy. Never a moment when he didn't
have to glance over his shoulder for something with a white rose attached to it.
Get the Kleenex out for poor old Henners. All together now....awwwwww.... And
Richard would have been up there, having a cushy time in Heaven---where everyone
liked, appreciated and supported him---knowing he and Henry wouldn't meet in the

He didn't like ditherers either - those who couldn't quite make up their
mind. Now Edward was brilliant with them; give them a bear hug (or a knighthood)
and he'd won them over. Poor old Richard didn't like ditherers either, but then
if a man was loyal to a cause how could he hesitate?
What never fails to amaze me is how our Henery tolerated the arch-ditherer
of all ditherers, Mr T Stanley. Ma must have been powerful indeed.
And yes, quite a few of those who plotted against Richard ended up on the
scaffold themselves when they'd decided the grass wasn't greener. Pity a King
had to die to prove it. H

Sandra there is some lovely stuff in the Ian Arthurson book about how a little group set out to poison him (HT not Stanley) and then got the wind up at the last moment. The idea was to put poison on door handles, down door jambs etc. HT got more and more itchy about all this (sorry not from the poison) and withdrew into his own room with his own guard - was that the forming of the Beefeaters? So he no longer had an open Privy Chamber where you could go and meet him. To get at him was like going through security at an airport. What a life! As you say Richard must have been looking over his shoulder grinning. I know now why Penn didn't start his book at the beginning of the reign - it warrants a volume on its own. Oh, agreed agreed about Penn's missing volume, Hilary! I was hugely
dismayed to find The Winter King only started halfway through Henry's reign. But
poor Henry, eh? Surrounded by white roses and arsenic (or whatever). I too have
him being the target of a poisoner, although nothing to do with smearing the
stuff where he'll touch it. No wonder he was paranoid. But going about it the
way Arthurson mentions seems rather haphazard. How could they be sure of getting
Henry? They might have killed everyone else, leaving him the last man standing.
After all, that was his usual role. BTW, out of interest, who was in the
group?

Sandra there is some lovely stuff in the Ian Arthurson book about how a
little group set out to poison him (HT not Stanley) and then got the wind up at
the last moment. The idea was to put poison on door handles, down door jambs
etc. HT got more and more itchy about all this (sorry not from the poison) and
withdrew into his own room with his own guard - was that the forming of the
Beefeaters? So he no longer had an open Privy Chamber where you could go and
meet him. To get at him was like going through security at an airport. What a
life! As you say Richard must have been looking over his shoulder
grinning.
I know now why Penn didn't start his book at the beginning of the reign -
it warrants a volume on its own. H

Get the Kleenex out for poor old Henners. All together now....awwwwww.... And
Richard would have been up there, having a cushy time in Heaven---where everyone
liked, appreciated and supported him---knowing he and Henry wouldn't meet in the
afterlife, because Henry would be down in the warm place, being miserable
alongside Beelzebub. Seems entirely fitting.

Good luck to you,
Mike.

I was hugely dismayed to find The Winter King only started halfway through Henry's reign. But poor Henry, eh? Surrounded by white roses and arsenic (or whatever). I too have him being the target of a poisoner, although nothing to do with smearing the stuff where he'll touch it. No wonder he was paranoid. But going about it the way Arthurson mentions seems rather haphazard. How could they be sure of getting Henry? They might have killed everyone else, leaving him the last man standing. After all, that was his usual role. BTW, out of interest, who was in the group? Sandra=^..^= From: mailto: Sent: Monday, May 26, 2014 10:35 AMTo: Subject: Re: Press articles about Richard Sandra there is some lovely stuff in the Ian Arthurson book about how a little group set out to poison him (HT not Stanley) and then got the wind up at the last moment.

A few articles today about spinal analysis. It seems Leicester, in conjunction with Cambridge and Loughborough, have produced a 3D scan at last. The research paper is in 'The Lancet' but there's a good summary here:http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/may/30/richard-iii-no-bunch-backed-toad-hunchback-research-lancetAn article in 'The Telegraph' article includes a few scan images, but it's undermined by a crass headline and confused use of terminology in the text.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/10863315/Richard-IIIs-hunchback-would-not-have-held-him-back-in-battle.htmlSome helpful comments from Jo Appleby:Although the scoliosis looks dramatic, it probably did
not cause a major physical deformity. This is because he had a well-balanced curve. The condition would have meant
that his trunk was short in comparison to the length of his limbs, and his
right shoulder would have been slightly higher than the left, but this could
have been disguised by custom-made armour and by having a good tailor. (The) curve would not have prevented Richard from being an active individual,
and there is no evidence that Richard had a limp as his curve was well
balanced and his leg bones were normal and symmetric. Jonathan From: "'SandraMachin' sandramachin@... []" <> To: Sent: Friday, 30 May 2014, 8:36 Subject: Fw: Press articles about Richard

Late today I've been on a day out to Minster Lovell and to see the holy

the latter was very quiet and peaceful. Both were atmospheric. People still
leave flowers at the well. Worth a visit.

We're in the doldrums regarding interesting articles about Richard. I'm
sure you don't want to read more about petitions for where he is to be buried,
how many awards the Leicester team are getting or what's what in the latest
productions of the Shakespeare play unless it's something really exciting and
different...or just plain weird. So all I have to offer today is:-

Jan here again. From one of the videos linked from the Lancet article in a discussion of the king's spine one speaker said he would have lost 2 or 3 inches, making him by my reckoning 5'6. - 5'5. Jonathan quoted Jo Appleby:"Although the scoliosis looks dramatic, it probably did
not cause a major physical deformity.
Carol responds:It's good to see Jo Appleby redeeming herself. Unfortunately, her unprofessional conduct and terminology ("He's a hunchback!") in the documentary was more memorable than this informed and articulate explanation--which has not kept the headline writers from using the word "hunchback."Looking forward to the Lancet article, which I hope will appear online. Meanwhile, the scans of the 3D skeleton are a great improvement over the 2D version we had before (again, courtesy of Jo Appleby). I wonder if she has gained some knowledge about and respect for Richard as a king and a man as she learned about his skeleton. I hope so.Carol

Isn't it time to forgive Dr Appleby? She has ultimately done a good job on the skeleton, and declared to the world that Richard wasn't a "hunchback."
Perhaps now is the time to get her "onside."

It will probably hang over her career, but she is doing very good work now, and the points made in all the newspapers this week as a result of her work are very helpful to the society.

Absolutely agree. How many of us have never made mistakes in our working lives, still less with the all the pressure of television cameras watching over us for a sustained period to catch every unguarded or ill-chosen word?JonathanP.S. Re the scan of the body as it was positioned in the grave, I think people need to blame 'The Daily Mail' rather than the University of Leicester. Still, I'm sure no one here would ever read that paper from choice.Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPad

Isn't it time to forgive Dr Appleby? She has ultimately done a good job on the skeleton, and declared to the world that Richard wasn't a "hunchback."
Perhaps now is the time to get her "onside."
She could be useful to the society.

She'll be haunted ever more. Every time that film is shown, there she is,
with the big gaffe and even bigger mattock.

Agreed, her ham handed use of the mattock, plus her stupid quips show
immaturity, and a very flawed technique. I hope she was disciplined as well as
cautioned to be more careful in her abilities and her comments.

Not a press article; but did anyone else see Aneurin Barnard last night in "Under Milk Wood?"
Lots of very famous Welsh people were in it, it was very well done.
When Aneurin came on, I thought, I know you, you were Richard III.

Jan here again. From one of the videos linked from the Lancet article in a discussion of the  king's spine one speaker said he would have lost 2 or 3 inches, making him by my reckoning 5'6. - 5'5. Would that be the average height for men in the late C15?On 31 May 2014, at 14:41, "Gilda Felt gildaevf@... []" <> wrote:

It was very well done and they all did very well considering that some of them were singers and not actors. The only thing I would say is that no one was as good as Richard Burton as the narrator.Mary
