As I said, Stephen, I absolutely can't take this one on, but I'd be
very interested in your results.
Cecily's will is proving very interesting. As I've found, other
people have done work on it before, which has helped with identifying
a few of the individuals named, but I'm still going. Very interesting
connections. I'll say when I've finished, then if anyone wants a copy
of the file they can have it.
Marie
OK. What I now know is that the 1st Earl's eldest son succeeded him, followed by two of his sons and three grandsons (3-7). One of them, Roger, 5th Earl, married Sir Philip Sidney's daughter.
The grandson (1604-71) of the 2nd Earl's younger brother then succeeded them.
The 2nd Earl's sister married Sir Henry Capell, whose great-grandson Arthur, Lord Hadham, was beheaded in 1649 for remaining loyal to the Stuarts. Fairfax, Hadham's cousin, ordered the execution.
That is where Castelli ends but I do know that the 8th Earl, first of the junior branch, was the father of the first Duke and that Hadham's son was created Earl of Essex after the Devereux male line became extinct in 1646 (3rd Earl was a Civil War commander).
Note that these titles are still around and they were created for Anne's descendants, not married into. I plan to finish both lines when I get a couple of hours.

Just a little news to report:
I have connected the 8th Earl of Rutland to the current Duke and have
found an Archbishop of Canterbury (Manners-Sutton). I shall do the
Capells (from the first Earl's daughter) next. Then I visit the
library and verify everything in Burke's.
Marie, perhaps I could privately e-mail the result as an attachment?
I do genealogy in PowerPoint, as I may have mentioned.

Well, I think I have finished the basic research, now I need to
confirm it all offline. The 10th Earl of Essex is from a different
branch to the 7th, 8th and 9th. He was born in 1920 and his son,
Viscount Malden, in 1944. Unless Tompsett has missed someone, there
is no alternative male line from the first Earl and the present Earl
has no grandchildren. Logically, the main title is on it's last legs.
