We know how Shakespeare can affect someone's reputation, now for a later example:
In "Henry VIII", Edward of Buckingham is portrayed as a plotter. This is replicated in the ITV film last year.
In fact, his "treason" was to (reportedly) express the wish that, were the Chopaholic to die childless (not unlikely in c.1520 as only Mary had survived and was still very young), he would like to succeed. Furthermore, as the Tudors relied principally on the Beaufort claim, he would have been their heir under that scenario.
