In the Telegraph.

So. Martin thinks Shakespeare invented Gollum by way of Richard
(Tolkien who?). And there's a photo of Martin's Watson and that other
guy who plays Sherlock; they're wearing white rose boutonnieres. And a
lot of other, wide-ranging stuff.

There is a little coincidence with the Freeman / Tolkien comment. The inspiration for the two towers was Stoneyhurst College, where the author spent a lot of time. This was built by the Shireburn family (family name originally Bayley).

This is deep in the Stanleys' area of influence and there is (from memory) a Stanley / Shireburn marriage in the fifteenth century.

The countryside around the manor, now a college also provided the landscape for the books.

This is in Lancashire by the way.

Some of the names were borrowed from Brittany - Rohan is near the castle Josselin where Jasper Tudor was held. Meriadec is the name of a legendary founding figure of Breton history.

Kind regards
David

I adore Tolkien and am amused that so much of what he made use of to create his locations, characters and lore can be traced not only to England, but Ireland, Scotland (Celtic Fairy lore in particular), Scandanavia, Finland and other sources -- especially as he went on record saying that he wanted to write an original mythology for England as it hadn't one.

The longer I live, the more I think Tolkien was right when he said something to the effect that the invention of the internal combustion engine was the beginning of the end. He lived through a hellish war and saw so much of his childhood world change, yet he managed to channelled the losses into something grand.

How do I relate this back to Richard? Ummm... if Richard had an Elrond or a Gandalf to advise him, perhaps he would have had a longer reign. There.
