Their eldest son died before they did, and as a result none of their
children became King (or Queen).

Almost there but what makes these four Kings of England UNIQUE in
that respect? Katy said that there are others whose heirs predeceased
them. Think of Eustace of Blois, Edward the Black Prince, Edward of
Middleham and Frederick.
There is a free copy of the "Stafford Line" in it.

All of the sons were named heir to the throne, and all died before they
could inherit it?
I was about to suggest that all the fathers died within a year of their
sons, but George and Frederick scupper that one.
Hmmm, will have to think more deeply.

You are right about the principle - I misremembered the year of Frederick's death (1751 not '59).
Eustace died in 1153 and Stephen in 1154.
The Black Prince died in 1376 and Edward III in 1377.
We all know the next answer.
