Has anyone else seen this? They've now put a blond wig on the reconstructed head (and not a very good wig either). Words fail me. At least they've tidied up the shaggy eyebrows. Can it get any worse though?? http://www.culture24.org.uk/history-and-heritage/royal-history/art52050-head-of-richard-third-reconstructed-in-four-hour-operation-based-on-dna-test-results Sharon (who's glad she didn't waste a tenner on the BBC History magazine-book)

I hated it anyway, so this latest travesty will only make me hate it more.
He may have been blonde as a child was the verdict, not all his life. And if one looks at the fragments of Edward IV's hair, the blonde god had actually dirty brown hair when he died.
I'm not even looking at the link as I know it will make me cry again!

First the recreation-head had nearly black hair , then light brown, now blond. You can't say the "creators" of this head are not adaptable. But they never cared much about historical accuracy anyway. Otherwise they should have changed that ridiculous headgear long ago. Paul, it warms my heart that you hated the recreation head from the beginning just as I did. There are better specialists around who could have done a considerable better job than the Dundee team.
In one way the new blond Richard looks a little bit bettter because the terrible eyebrows are not so prominent now.

Yes, the eyebrows look so much better. But I agree with Paul. Richard's hair would have very likely darkened to a light brown or dirty blond.

Unfortunately, yes. It looks kind of like Rod Stewart with his blond hair. Why??????

Pamela asked: Why?????

Why? Because they did not read Dr. Turi King's text thouroughly enough. and probably for the sake of
sensation. Look here, we found out something new that was not known before!
They could try blue hair for a change next time.

Hello Pamela,
I was just thinking the same thing when I saw this for the first time this morning. The DNA report from what I can remember, having read it a few times, but last time was a while since, it said that he had a 77% chance of having fair hair in childhood, it did not confirm that Richard still had it when he was an adult. There is every chance that Richard had fair hair or lighter hair in childhood but he could very well go darker in adulthood, this is not uncommon. Personally I thought that the facial reconstruction looked better before; the changes seem a bit rushed and the face has lost some of its original structure and grace. As you say, changing it just for the sake of it seems more for the purposes of promotion it seems a needless exercise. The portrait of Richard from the Antiquiries Society is meant to be the most contemporary to Richards time, although it is believed all are after his death, but the others are from at least 25 years later. This has fair hair and blueish eyes. Why rush the changes? Why not make a second reconstruction and allow people to compare them? And what is the next trick?
Cheers

His hair dresser must have had the day off. LOL Rod Stewart, thats excellent. The changes are not well done at all, very rushed and probably not very accurate either. Never mind. Oh I know what it reminds me off; do you recall those dolls with different heads and different hair styles? Or that one with the huge head and the different couloured wigs and lengths of hair? Girlsworld. This could be marketed as Boys World or Richard World LOL

The only thing I can think of to top this, is a statuesque blond next to him a la Rod Stewart, or maybe a redhead like Liz I. I have no idea why, but this is devolving into a ludicrous spectacle, when it should be a solemn ceremony, without the politics, petty and vicious "historians" sporting specious arguments to sell books, and the crazy changing of hair color. I cannot think of something in the USA which would compare to this. Perhaps some of the skeletal remains of indigenous people, which were held in museums, but they have been returned to the various tribes.

There was a programme on BBC last year about Pompeii in which two skeleton heads were given the reconstruction treatment. When they unveiled them I gasped, so lifelike were they. So it is possible to do a great job, unlike whoever did the reconstruction on Richard.
