It is not considered fashionable this year to use the
word "Christmas", but too bad, the holiday is the symbolic day of
our savior's birth. How fascinating it would have been to visit one
great 15th C. court Christmas celebration, but NOT working in the
kitchen!
Merry Christmas, and a Joyous New Year to all!

Personally I never bother to avoid the word Christmas unless sending
cards to friends of a specifically non-Christian background. Then it
is awkward, and I tend to send cards saying something vague
like 'Season's Greetings'.
Soap box me opines that politically correct language is best not left
to the people who tend to come up with it, as they rarely seem to
have a good enough understanding of the English language to avoid
making an even worse mess. 'Holiday' = 'Christmas' is a good example
of this, imo. For one thing, holiday too has a religious background,
being in origin literally a 'holy day'. For another, it makes little
sense to Brits, as holiday is just our normal word for vacation and
tends to conjure up visions of sun, sand, tequila, dodgy fake tans
and half-finished hotels rather than snow and sleigh-bells.

How about Yule?

On that note, a very, very happy Christmas/Yule/holiday/nearly-
solstice to one and all,

Marie

PS. Bring back Twelfth Night!

Yes, working in the kitchen in Richard's time probably would have involved refeathering a swan or basting a porpoise...
