I expect I am not the only one steeling themself for Channel 4 in the
U.K's 2 hour marathon on Perkin Warbeck, another docu drama (in other
words cheap drama!), that claims to be investigating Perkin's claim to
be Richard of York.
While no actor is in the cast list as Richard III I have no doubt we
will be in for the wicked uncle nonsense again. The Radio Times has
photos of the 'poor young things' huddling closely together, and an
actor is listed as playing 'Richard at age 12'.
I think the most depressing thing is the claim that it is 'one of
history's most gruesome and colourful mysteries' being re-examined in
'this factual drama'. FACTUAL? One of the sources is Desmond Seward!
FACTUAL? I think NOT!

Many years ago (maybe 14 or 15) when I was Chapter Coordinator for
the American Branch, I received a letter from a person in Bermuda who
told about a story repeated through the generations in their family.
Evidently they were descended from the Tyrell family and the story
goes that the Princes were to be taken from the Tower and hidden in
thier home on the way to another location. Apparently Elizabeth
Woodville was in on this scheme. I believe this actually took place
according to this family's legend.
Several years and a couple of moves later and I cannot find the
letter - isn't that always the way -- but I remember being so
intrigued with the possibilities.
Perhaps that Bermuda person is still interested in, and maybe even
a member of, the Society and can fill us in on this story. I do believe
that I have heard or read of this tale in my years as a Ricardian.
This could account for the interest of Henry VII in James Tyrell even
many years after Henry was crowned King.

It quite possibly did happen, Janet. This was Gipping Hall near
Stowmarket and the Mid-Anglia Group have been there.

the canadian r3 branch has this
A most interesting revelation from Audrey Williamson, is a Tyrell family tradition which had been passed down through the generations. This story, related to Williamson by Mrs. Kathleen Margaret Drewe, a descendent of a Tyrell son adopted into the family in the 18th century, states that "the princes and their mother Elizabeth Woodville lived in the hall by permission of the uncle". The hall would be Gipping in Suffolk, and the uncle would be Richard III. As there is no evidence that Elizabeth and her children ever visited Gipping while Edward was alive, (in which case they wouldn't need the permission of "the uncle"), this sojourn would have occurred during Richard’s reign.
http://home.cogeco.ca/~richardiii/tyrell.html
and this was sent to me via a tyrrell researcher contact.
it also comes from williamson's book.
The para is: <<IN ADDTION i AM GRATEFUL TO THE GUILLES-ALLES LIBRARY OF GUERNSEY FOR A COPY OF LA sOCIETE GUERNESIAISE REPORT AND TRANSACTIONS FOR THE YEAR 1956, VOL.XVI PART II WHICH CONTAINS AN IMPORTANT ARTICLE ON SIR EDWARD BRAMPTON BY CECIL ROTH,D.PHIL, FRHIST.S, A LIFELONG RESEARCHER INTO THIS SUBJECT; AND TO MRS.KATHLEEN MARGARET DREWE WHO FOLLOWING AN ARTICLE OF MINE IN THE SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINE (11 MARCH
1973) FIRST DREW MY ATTENTION TO THE TRADITION IN THE
TYRELL FAMILY WHICH WAS REPEATED TO HER PERSONALLY BY
HER MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER WHO LIVED AT THE TYRELL
FAMILY HOME GIPPING HALL IN SUFFOLK. (Mrs.Drewe is
directly descended from one of three French boys,
refugees from the Revolution,
adopted as sons and given the Tyrell name by a
descendant of James Tyrell in the 18th century. Mrs.
Drewe's grandmother obtained the story not only from
her husband but also from his mother, the daughter of
the original French adopted son. It was said to be
already a tradition of long standing in the
family)....
it directed me towards research into Tyrell wills and
papers kindly listed and provided by the Suffolk
Council Record Office, Ipswich branch...a portion of
Sir James Tyrell's will with his signature is
published here for the first time..
she goes on to mention co-operation with J A Speares
(whom I heard lecture on Tyrell) <<whose study of
Mancini and political aspects of Richard's reign
valuably reinforce and supplement my own
conclusions...>>

The docu drama about Perking Warbeck, you know, the one which shows
Margaret Beaufort keeping the princes in a dungeon in the Tower for
years unnoticed by anyone, is getting a repeat AS AN EDUCATIONAL
SCHOOLS PROGRAMME on Channel 4 Monday the 13th at 09.30 a.m.
No alternative version of the story is scheduled. What a surprise!
Expect a lot of hits on the web sites, and questions.

It will have to be heavily edited. There's at least on use of the F
word, and Henry Tudor using his "groom of the stool" to full effect.
