Those of you who live in the area, have you been there and would you recommend it?

I wouldn't make a special trip, but if you are in York anyway and have
the time then it's probably worth popping in for a look. There are
other Museums in York (Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum, National
Railway Museum just for starters) that are all much, much better as
museums if time is limited and the Jorvik Centre is more fun.
I've never seen the play they put on. My seven year old daughter was
very unnerved by the 'execution chamber' or whatever they call it.
If you are visiting York don't be tempted to stop at the Richard III
pub (on the riverside) for a drink unless you particularly like the
company of hen and stag parties.
