Another anti Ricardian book

Elizabeth Wydeville

Arlene Okerlund

üThe blurb says.....

ü
Malicious sorceress or slandered queen?

Elizabeth Wydeville, queen consort to Edward IV, has traditionally
been portrayed as a scheming, cold-blooded and conceited opportunist.
Yet was she a calculating adulteress or a tragic wife and mother? As
this thrilling biography shows, Elizabeth lived a life of heartbreak
and loss that no other queen has since endured.

This shocking exposÈ depicts Elizabeth as beautiful and adored wife,
distraught mother of the two lost Princes in the Tower and innocent
queen slandered by the politicians she controlled. Elizabeth had her
brother, cousin and three sons murdered by the callous Richard III
before suffering the accusations by Richardís parliament that her
marriage to Edward IV was adulterous and her children illegitimate.

Despite coming from a cultured, pious and chivalric family, Elizabeth
died in poverty and was buried as a commoner. Yet this exceptional
woman was the direct ancestor of Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots and
Elizabeth I. Her poignant story is one of bloodshed and romance.

Actually I think that blurb is the entire book.. Surely no need to
read it????? I think we can predict every word and argument.

Surely she won't be able to blame Richard for Elizabeth dying in poverty!

Dear Amertzanis and all:

That blurb doesn't sound like Arlene Okerlund, a
reasonable person I've met at two AGMs. How about
seeing if the book matches the blurb before dismissing
it?

When I talked with Arlene at the Toronto AGM, her
position sounded much more like the one espoused by
Ann Sutton and Livia Visser-Fuchs in their _Ricardian_
article on Elizabeth Woodville, published, if memory
serves, in the early 1990s.

Hi, all,

I don't believe Arlene Okerlund belongs to this forum, or surely she'd have
said something in defense or explanation of her book. I'm not sure that
authors have much say in the "blurbs" which appear on the covers, nor
that the writers of the covers read the books very closely, if at all.

I hope Arlene will contribute some insights to the American Branch listserv
group which can be brought here if it will contribute to the discussion.

LML,
Pam
