What happened to Middleham?
What happened to Middleham?

I assume that after Richard's death his property went into the clutches
of the Usurper.Did he keep it all or share it out among his supporters?
I wonder particularly what happened to Middleham, who gained it and
lived there.

The following is a brief resume from the book I purchased when I was visiting Middleham:
After Richards death Middleham was seized by Tudor & remained in royal ownership until
1604. Income from the Middleham estates went to the royal treasury and in some years
was used to pay for the garrison of Berwick upon Tweed.
In 1604 the castle was granted by James 1 to Sir Henry Linley. In 1613 it passed to Edward
Viscount Loftus on his marriage to Jane Linley. It was garrison twice during the Civil War
in 1654 & l655 when it was occupied by 30 men. It was used to house prisoners of war
but was not involved in battle or siege. In 1662 it was sold to Edward Wood and remained
in the wood family until 1889. By this time it was in a ruinous state.
In 1925 the castle was placed in the guardianship of the Office of Works & was repaired.
Since 1984 it has been in the care of English Heritage.
best wishes Eileen

I agree the statue is peculiar. When I went there the castle supplied a blurb in which the sculptor set out the symbolism she employed, but she didn't explain why she depicted him without any arms!

Helen, hope you are able to go one day. Not only is Middleham
fascinating, but the entire area is spectacularly beautiful. Very
easy to understand why a man with the background of Richard would
have found solace there. I hope it hasn't become too commercial,
though. We were there in the early seventies, and the only others
were a grim faced Yorkshireman and his dog, watching over the
keep. The place definitely has a "feel."
