On August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the
Virgin, Richard III declined to begin the movement of
his army from Leicester to meet the forces of Henry
Tudor. On August 16, that movement began.
This is my annual signal to replace the American
Branch's customary homepage with its in memoriam
homepage, which is now online at http://www.r3.org/
I have made a few housekeeping updates to the Bosworth
section (mostly updating dates, etc.), but because I
have been distracted in recent months I would
appreciate a gentle reminder if I've overlooked
something critical.
This message can also serve as a reminder for those
richard3 listers who normally place an in memoriam
notice in their local papers -- or, in this
electronic era, on websites and blogs -- but have not
yet done so.
Without wanting to seem in the least sacrilegious (by
inviting comparisons with the Lenten season), it has
always seemed to me that the interval between August
22 and October 2 is an appropriate time for Ricardian
reflection and consideration of what our Society
membership means to all of us and what we hope that
the Society in general and we as Ricardians can
accomplish.

Nothing wrong with a memorial season at all, Laura. Is something fun traditionally done on October 2 in celebration?
(Offhand- to any Phantom of the Opera fans here, it's a momentous time in that circle too. August 18 is the Phantom's birthday.)

Yes, for some definitions of "fun" (smile). Both the
Society itself and the American Branch, and other
branches worldwide, hold their annual general meetings
the weekend closest to October 2, with various
attendant festivities.

"And there was much rejoicing..."
I wore a very flimsy paper Rose of York tucked in my hair last year, then felt terribly foolish when I discovered that there was a community planter at school FULL of the buggers. This year my friend Jamila (the sort whom, if asked about Richard, would probably light up and call him "super-cool") wants to have a traditional medieval feast. I say, "Good luck."

Richard seems to have been a more than conventionally religious
fellow. So what are we to make of the story that he did not hear
Mass the morning of August 22, before that battle? Truth or Tudor-
ganda?

I honestly don't know what we are to make of it. One
tradition says that he heard Mass the night before at
St. James, Sutton Cheney. Crowland says that Henry
caught him unawares and before they could rustle up
mass they had to go fight.

I make no claims to being a rabid Ricardian but that I would put down to
Tudor propaganda. To contemporary eyes it would have damned Richard's soul to
die unshriven. It is not impossible but is unlikely. Most men would have
heard Mass and for a King with access to a private priest if he wanted one....
Nahh - I'll go with the Tudor propaganda for that one.

Agreed Diomedes. No sense in the story at all!
