George seems to have been the only executed person who could be buried in one piece. However, as I discovered when researching the "Accidental Traitor" Arthur Capell, Baron Hadham, heads were usually sewn back onto corpses for this purpose!

A friend in our American chapter and I have been having fun trying to
figure out the reason that such a portrait would have been painted
long after the death of George.Any other ideas?

Yikes, Stephen, cannot imagine wanting to reunite a noggin with its
corpse after being on display for a time. I suppose this "priviledge"
was reserved for VIP's?

Gosh, I always believed George to be a head turner like Edward but this
portrait makes him look a real bonny bugger - not.

Thinking only of treason:
Would male commoners like John of Gloucester have their intestines sewn back in and their "privy members" re-attached? Just possible.
Female commoners like Margaret Bulmer (Thomas Stafford's aunt) could not be un-burnt. However, the Colchester gentlemen Lucas and Lisle were shot which may not have necessitated much in the way of repair work.

Well, if this portrait does indeed represent our George, it was
certainly not painted during his lifetime. We were just wondering who
had it painted and why.Perhaps Margaret, his daughter, had it done to
remind herself of her royal blood, or one of her children commissined
it.The armour is of a later style, somewhat Spanish, and we know that
Lady Margaret was friends with Catherine of Aragon, and was very close
with the princess Mary. My artist friend tells me that court painters
would use the features of living relatives, a kind of amlagam, in
order to reconstruct and paint a deceased one.I thought the painting
also bears a resemblance to the drawing of George in the Rous Roll.

My usual source is fairly sure that Charles I and the Duke of Monmouth were sewn back together before burial.
