Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows what happened to Sir Rob Aspell, the knight who was with Richard's elder brother Edmund when he was killed at Wakefield? Did Aspell survive the battle and did he go on to fight in other WOR battles?

No relation to Michael, I suppose?
Before you ask, I'm definitely not looking that one up on Castelli or
Tompsett!

No relation that I'm aware of. Is Michael a Vangen or a Ratcliffe? If he's a Vangen, there probably is some sort of distant relation between us.

Call me a rube, but what are Castelli & Tompsett? I'm new to the forum.

Sorry, I was being flippant. I meant Michael Aspel, UK television
presenter!
Castelli (www.tudorplace.com.ar) and Tompsett
(www3.dcs.hull.ac.uk/public/genealogy/royal) are the genealogy
websites that I prefer to use.

I can certainly do that. I'll dig out my Wakefield folder tonight and get the exact address link, which will take you directly to it.

I wonder if you could help me regarding which Lord Grey held which
estate, particularly regarding the English holdings, which it seems
were mainly in Beds, Bucks and Essex?

Also, have I got the various Grey coats of arms correct? (set 8 on

Re: [Richard III Society Forum] Sir Rob Aspell

fayre rose
that's a pretty tall order. it's not something i've really looked into.

the grey's appear to have inherited much of their land holdings via marriage partners. i.e. henry m. iseult/isolda bardolf/ph gave them condor in the 1200's. from these two people descend the vast majority of the de greys.
edward m. elizabeth ferrers gave them groby in the 1400's.

king john lackland's "evil" advisor john grey bishop of norwich is connected to the family. (he's an uncle to henry m. iseult) king john and john grey/gray move to be the archbishop of canterbury got them both excommunicated, and had all of england placed under interdict.

walter grey, bishop of york was another nasty. (he may connect to henry m. iseult, or he could even be a son or nephew of evil john grey/gray).
goto: www.archive.org and pop http://www.medieval-life.co.uk/article/barn.htm
in the wayback machine.

moreover, the grey/gray family were all over the british isles/english landholdings. these people knew how/who to intermarry. the greys maybe half relatives to willie the conk. william's mother's brother is rumoured to have sired the de grai/gray/grey family.

the blue and white (azure/argent) shield with red/gules variants seem to be the most popular/distinguishing feature of the de greys and their descendants. i've not studied a lot of the heraldry for the family.

i know there are sheilds with a grey quarter or two combined with other families. most of my research on the grey family has been to do with genealogy, and i've not followed land holdings as much as bloodlines. it seems they held assorted manors mostly in the honour of clare aka mortimers.

they are in and around the royal "bedchamber" for centuries. their rise to power seems to have peaked with putting lady jane grey and her grey-line cousin guildford dudley on the throne

one grey family switched to the surname marmion. (sir walter scott is an inlaw cousin to the greys - if i correctly recall, an eighth cousin.)
scott is the person who coined the term war of the roses.

scott loved to collect family folk lore and write about it, in a non-connecting/threatening way. in my opinion, given what i have dug up on the de greys. he had the connections back then to access information the ordinary person could not.

i know the info i'm digging up, had i done so back when scott was writing could have gotten me in big trouble with the powers that be.

during my research i was surprised to find that there is not one definitive book (or series of books) written on this family, yet they have so many fascinating aspects.

i will eventually, write and publish my findings, but the de greys are like cats. they have kittens, who in turn have kittens, who have more kittens..and each generation of kittens just keeps expanding.

the real complicating factor regarding the de greys..is they keep using the same names over and over again. it gets to the point of ridiculous at times. with john being used to even name children in the same family more than once. which makes it "loads o'fun" untwisting which john is who and from him descends who.

anyhow, long answer short, i may be able to assist minorly in the new year.

i know i've just opened another whole new kettle of fish with my research in the last couple of weeks, and i'm chasing it down now as far as it will let me. between family birthdays, christmas, and my business dealings time is at a premium for me right now.

sorry i can't be of more assistance.

roslyn
