Tonight, I shall attach my latest document, "Cromwells" as a File. This is a result of the bad weather and a by-product of my Catesby research.
There is a "Notes" slide in the document, which I think is quite informative. The Complete Peerage tells a funny story of how a late Tudor/ early Stuart historian saw that the Earl of Essex and Baron Cromwell had been in Parliament on the same day in the 1530s. He assumed the former to be Thomas Cromwell and the latter to be his son, Gregory. Gregory was not ennobled until after his father's execution - the Earl of Essex was a Bourchier and Lord Cromwell was Thomas. Consequently, this historian assumed the Barony of Oakham to be a title created by writ and open to the female line. The last male heir, the 4th Earl of Ardglass, died in 1687 and his eldest daughter attended Mary II's funeral, believing herself to be "Baroness Cromwell".
Oakham, incidentally, was part of the Stafford estates until the 3rd Duke's attainder in 1521.

How many of you have heard of the Ardlamont mystery (1893), a Scottish case involving a con-man and probable murder Alfred Monson? The very recent death of Hon. Alexander Monson of concussion in police custody in Kenya?
I can demonstrate that they are related, which came as a surprise because Alexander was the son of the 12th Baron Monson and Alfred (found not proven of murdering Cecil Hamborough) seemed to be a commoner. However, Alfred's great-great-grandfather was the 2nd Baron. Furthermore, Alfred's ancestors include the 2nd Duke of Rutland - and hence Anne of Exeter.
The best source on the Ardlamont case is Jack House's Murder Not Proven, in which it is the second case. When you put together Alfred's lack of money, the large insurance policy on Hamborough, the attempted drowning by sabotage of a boat (evocative of Nero's attempt on his mother's life)and finally the shooting "accident", murder is the only explanation.
