Happy New Year, everyone! One of my many, many resolutions is to get my
Henry VII musical into playable form this year, come hell or high water. I've
been sitting on it like some poisonous, bunch-backed toad and it's starting
to make me ill. I need to get on with my other projects; no surprise that Mr.
Tudor rots one's mind.

Thankyou, Nathaniel.
Now, on the subject of dramatised Tudor Kings, Wolsey and Cromwell
have been mentioned in another thread recently - but who played them
in "Carry on, Henry"?

Saw "Carry On Henry" while staying near Sloane Square during my trip to
England in 1971. Here's my question. Who said, "I do so love royal
balls?", at which point Sid James did one of his famous 'takes'.
Sid James was the skinniest Henry VIII yet.

You would be correct. 'Carry On' humour was always so profound..

Those Carry On films - to be honest they never really melted my butter - BUT to this day I
still have to laugh when I recall Kenneth Williams as Julias Caesar - about to be murdered
- shrieking "infamy - infamy - they've all got it in for me" - just so funny. What about if
they had made a Carry On Richard 111 - some ideas for the cast -
Joan Sims - Cecily Neville
Barbara Windsor - Elizabeth Woodville
Una Stubbs - Anne Neville (No one too loud!!)
Sid James - either Edward lV or Hastings (cant make my mind up!)
Kenneth Williams - Henry Tudor
Richard himself - Im afraid I just cannot picture a comic version of my favourite but tragic
King
Any ideas for other castings??

Thought you might like to know I worked on Carry on
Camping (the one where Babs loses her top and they had
to paint the mud green in October to make it look like
grass!) I was a baby at the time of course!:-)
A great bunch of guysm Kenny apart, who was in a fould
mood the day I met him. Joan Sims made me laugh so
much I got asked to leave the theatre until I could
control myself!
Happy Days!
Paul
p.s. There was a Carry on Dick - butit wasn't about
anyone called Richard - Thank God!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tony Robinson did play an excellent Baldrick, though, in Blackadder with Rowan Atkinson
- I have gone off him though since in a documentation about the Titanic I saw recently
he dissed the bravery of the orchestra (I think everyone is aware of the stories regarding
the band playing until the bitter end) - saying he didnt believe it - what would have been
the point! I thought that was an absolute atrocious thing to say as I believe it is well
documented that survivors on the lifeboats said the band were playing up until the end.
Enough said - is that right you cannot say too much about living persons on this Forum???

A pair of utterly poisonous spoilt brats are required to play Edward V and Richard, Duke of York, so that when they disappear from view everyone will assume they have been murdered as all those who ever met them will have itched to do just that.

Hi, Your comment about a comical casting of Richard set me thinking . . .
and what popped into my mind was Marty Feldman as Eye-gor in *Young
Frankenstein.* Comments? (I realize that such a thing would be sacrilege,
but it might be good for emotional healing to be able to envision a comic
Richard - especially if equal treatment is given to the upstart Tudors!)

Now we have, very cleverly, sorted the cast out for the Carry On version - I have often
wondered why a serious film about Richard has never been made (I do not count the
Shakespeare/Olivier version which was a fiction) After all what a story to tell. And the cast?
How about
Richard 111 - Ralph Fiennes
Elizabeth Woodville - Cate Blanchard
Anne Neville - Keira Knightly
Morton - Derek Jacobi
Edward lV - Kenneth Brannagh
Margaret Beaufort - Dame Maggie Smith (she could do that pious look very well)
Henry Tudor - Richard E Grant
Hastings - Liam Neeson
Cecily Nevile - Helen Mirren (so good as Elizabeth 1 in the recent dramatisation shown
recently)
Clarence - Dont know his name but the actor who is the new James Bond
Buckingham - Hugh Grant
The princes - One of them could be played by the child actor in Love Actually (I think he is
Hugh Grants nephew)
William Stanley - Ray Winston
Henry Vl - Jeremy Irons
Of course it could get tricky when it came to the part about the disappearance of the
princes - wrongly handled and, possible, a lot of us (well me anyway) would
boycott the cinema and/or throw eggs at the premier etc., etc., Hopefully it could have an
ending where after the tragic outcome of Bosworth, the two princes would be shown
sailing into the sunset on a shiip bound for Burgundy and the welcome arms of their aunt
Margaret.
Oh and the music MUST be written by Patrick Doyle who wrote the beautiful music for
Kenneth Brannaghs Henry V
Anyone else got any ideas for the casting of such a film?
Best wishes Eileen

wondered why a serious film about Richard has never been made (I do not count the
Shakespeare/Olivier version which was a fiction) After all what a story to tell. And the cast?
How about
Richard 111 - Ralph Fiennes
Elizabeth Woodville - Cate Blanchard
Anne Neville - Keira Knightly
Morton - Derek Jacobi
Edward lV - Kenneth Brannagh
Margaret Beaufort - Dame Maggie Smith (she could do that pious look very well)
Henry Tudor - Richard E Grant
Hastings - Liam Neeson
Cecily Nevile - Helen Mirren (so good as Elizabeth 1 in the recent dramatisation shown
recently)
Clarence - Dont know his name but the actor who is the new James Bond
Buckingham - Hugh Grant
The princes - One of them could be played by the child actor in Love Actually (I think he is
Hugh Grants nephew)
William Stanley - Ray Winston
Henry Vl - Jeremy Irons
Of course it could get tricky when it came to the part about the disappearance of the
princes - wrongly handled and, possible, a lot of us (well me anyway) would
boycott the cinema and/or throw eggs at the premier etc., etc., Hopefully it could have an
ending where after the tragic outcome of Bosworth, the two princes would be shown
sailing into the sunset on a shiip bound for Burgundy and the welcome arms of their aunt
Margaret.
Oh and the music MUST be written by Patrick Doyle who wrote the beautiful music for
Kenneth Brannaghs Henry V
Anyone else got any ideas for the casting of such a film?
Best wishes Eileen

Paris and Nicole Hilton! They look like adolescent boys anyway.

Casting Edward IV is like casting Elvis. You need both a skinny one and
a fat one.

No good. Nobody'd get upset if the Hilton girls disappeared without
trace. Besides, young Edward V was reputed to be intelligent.

How about Johnny Depp for R3? He has the dark coloring, dark hair, is smaller in stature... And for E4, what about Gerard Butler?

Oh and the music MUST be written by Patrick Doyle who wrote the beautiful music for

Anyone else got any ideas for the casting of such a film?
Best wishes Eileen

Oh nonononono.
E4, in his tall and beautiful 'Sun in Splendour' days, before he
goes to fat, **must** be played by Jeremy Northam. [That voice!]

As for the children - who is that child actor of note at the moment:
Freddie something? I'd like him as E5 as he needs to be able
to 'do' intelligent and, possibly, sickly. I may need to invent a
role for that boy who plays Neville in the 'Harry Potter' films just
because he can look so vulnerable. His face can show such sadness
and perplexity - could he be the younger prince perhaps? Or, I know!
Edward of Middleham!
I'd like Maggie Smith to be cast as Duchess Cecily. I cast Ralph
Feinnes as George and there will be a powerful scene when son has to
explain his treachery to mother. [I would not be in George's shoes
for quids.] I rather see Bob Hoskins as somebody like Howard. Ian
Richardson could be a splendidly chilly Stanley, seated on that rise
above the battlefield, or behind it - whatever -, waiting to see
which side to favour.
And, nothing personal, but I don't want Keira Knightly near the
place.

I think I'm too young to have ever seen a Carry On film, but they sound brilliant. I know that a lot of people initially compared The Fearless Vampire Killers to them, and that's one of my favorites, so I suspect that I'd like them.
Incidentally, The Fearless Vampire Killers had a background vampire who was a parody of Richard. (Mail me at megan_phntmgrl@... if you want an image of him.)

Una Stubbs - Anne Neville (No one too loud!!)
Sid James - either Edward lV or Hastings (cant make my mind up!)

I love the casting game.
Gerard Butler was too pretty to play the Phantom of the Opera (I'm a bit of an experienced ranter on that subject) and he's too pretty to play Edward. Johnny Depp is probably too pretty to play Richard, but he's a brilliant actor, so there's hope there.
For a while I pictured Richard played by Adrien Brody, but then I saw King Kong and I noticed how tall he is. Now I'm thinking along the lines of Stuart Townshend- he's got the right sort of face.

I also do not like the Carry On films, although I know they're funny.
As far as I'm concerned, Ray Winstone the actor is just Ray Winstone
in different clothes.
There was a BBC programme a few months ago called "Coast" (I think)
and as soon as I saw one of the presenters I thought he would be ideal
as Richard. Sadly, I can't remember his name, but I think it was
Oliver somebody, he's a Scottish historian, and he is slim and has
fairly long dark hair
