Just reading through Hicks' False, Fleeting, Purjured Clarence. An
appendix lists all his estates, and where they were obtained from.
I must question some of the estates listed as having been forfeited by
James Butler, Earl of Wiltshire.
These included Lundy Island, for which I can find no reference, and the
castle of Wardour, Wiltshire. All references for Wardour list it as
having been built by Lord Lovel c.1395. As a Lancastrian, the Lord
Lovel (father of Francis) would have forfeited his property, but I can
find no case for Butler receiving these estates. Did the Lovels
recover the castle, or perhaps it was sold to Butler before this? Does
anyone know the owner of Lundy c.1453?
I've used a lot of info from the listings, and I'd hate to think that
Hicks has got his facts wrong.
"Not for the first time" did I hear someone cry?
