==================================

Mary's mother, Catherine of Aragon, was also a redhead: see this very lovely portrait by Sittow:

http://englishhistory.net/tudor/monarchs/aragon.html

Catherine's mother, Isabel the Catholic, was also a redhead. Her mother, Isabel of Portugal, was probably dark, but her father Juan II of Castile, was a tall, gentle, ineffective blond fellow, as was his own mother, Catherine of Lancaster (daughter of John of Gaunt). Catherine of Lancaster features in a book of pen-portraits by a contemporary, Fernán Pérez de Guzmán, called "Generaciones y Semblanzas". He tells us that Catherine was big, blonde, and a bit "masculine".

In a very poor Spanish-made movie about Catherine of Aragon's sister, Juana, which came out a couple of years ago, Isabel and all Juana's siblings look very dark, when, by portraits of Catherine and Juana, this was probably not completely the case. Here's a portrait of Juana by a contemporary, Colijn de Coter, which shows the coloring as darker than Catherine's, but not black or very dark brown:

http://www.lessing-photo.com/slideshow.asp?sid=S1BM12DF6W&qid=Q1PT15YR8D&cr=2&p=1&d=3

I think there's a little echo of family resemblance in this portrait to one of Fernando (you have to scroll down a ways but there's a bonus by way of a de Flandes portrait of Juana on the right, also showing her to be fairly light):

Enjoying it a bit more after first slight disappointment. Thought Kevin McKidd very good -
being ever so picky here but I thought they dropped a bit of a clanger with the portrait of
Mary Queen of Scots - she would have been younger then - I thought the portrait of her
garbed all in black was when she was older - although of course she was a widow at that
time. Another thing I also thought Amy Robsart was fully dressed when found, not in her
night clothes, as comment was made that although her neck was broken her hood i.e.
headdress, was undisturbed.

Havent read up lately on Leicester and Amy but my first thought re did she fall or was she
pushed - if she was suffering from breast cancer, which she was doomed to die from why
bother to murder her??

Stephen - who henry of huntingdon????
strggling to type this as cat refusin to dislodge herself from her fave position - drapped
around my neck with claws dug in for support - am giving up now and going to bed....
eileen, in pain

His mother was Catherine Pole, elder daughter of Montagu and thus granddaughter of Margaret of Salisbury. His father was Francis, 2nd Earl of Huntingdon and descended both from William Lord Hastings and Henry of Buckingham. He married Catherine Dudley, sister of Lord Guildford. He was "Lord President of the Council of the North" from 1572 to his death in 1595. Jones lists him as one of "Britain's Real Monarchs".
For much further information, try "The Puritan Earl" by Dr. Claire Cross (she will be addresing the Norfolk Branch on 23 September) or Castelli (www.tudorplace.com.ar).
It might take your mind off the pain!

The final part was last night. What did you all think of Hans
Matheson as Essex?

I thought Matheson played the part very well although I thought he looked more Spanish
than English.

I found part 4 a let-down. It was really too much about Essex, with
no mention of the succession question until the end. Retreading old
ground, then, especially for those of us who saw the Helen Mirren
version a few months back.

Matheson just sounded a little too screechy to be an Earl, whereas
Charles Dance really looked and sounded like a Duke two years ago.
