I'm on my lunch break. I've just seen this in book shops at £18.99.

I had a quick glance. My first impression is that there is plenty of
Richard bashing (not unexpected).

Hicks goes on a lot about the lack of a dispensation and the
illegality of the marriage. Well, he's obviously wrong now. I don't
know why he didn't ask Tempus to let him rewrite these bits because

a) it's historically inaccurate and misleading the reader
b) to people like Ricardians who do know about the dispensation, it
leaves him with egg on his face.

I probably will buy the book though.

I get the vibe that he thinks Anne had very little influence over
Richard and that it's another example of his mistreatment of women.

More surprisingly I got the impression that Hicks thinks Anne's
behaviour in marrying Gloucester is that of a money-grabbing slapper
(if you'll pardon the venacular). Obviously Hicks put it in academic
prose, but that's what it boils down to.

Interesting reversal of the usual view that it was Richard who was after Anne's money!

Yes, quite! I've heard of Anne being played that way in Shakespeare, but never has it been taken seriously as a theory, as far as I know. Until now, anyway.

Well you never know! Hicks might well be correct!

But seriously I am surprised Hicks has found enough on Anne to write a chapter let alone a
book!!

I'm constantly amazed at Hicks' propensity for finding enough subject
matter for books on most of his subjects. Edward V comes to mind. Even
Clarence has got to be a bit sparse.

Of course Hicks spends a lot of time discussing 'big picture'
sociological issues related to his various topics.

I think Hicks is like Barbara Cartland, writing the same book again
and again, with a few minor adjustments! :-)
