Re-checked Hicks
Re-checked Hicks
2006-02-21 16:24:55
A very quick post because I'm at work. I've had another look at Hicks'
book, and he does say that while it was unacceptable today it was OK to
marry a 15 year old in the 15th century. So I owe him an apology for
that.
I won't make any more detailed comments until I have the book in front
of me but I still get the vibe that he's critical of Anne and Richard.
Hicks has coined the term "serial incestor" to describe Richard for
marrying Anne and planning to marry Elizabeth of York.

If his book contains such inane statements like that - I mean anyone who would read a
book about Anne Neville would obviously know that already - then Hicks must be
desperate to find enough things to fill a book.
I am still boiling about what he said about Anne being a widow would miss sex!! - what
type of man thinks on lines like that - I think we already know dont we ladies??

what a riot..serial incestor..there is a whole lotta that going on with plantagenets and associated families.
i sure hope hicks clarifies that richard wasn't alone in this "in house" practice.
you know it really sounds like hicks is writing to the baser instincts of our society who "just love" sensationalism.
hicks appears to be a writer of the hysterical vs historical events. one can only hope he clarifies his unnecessary commentary, or he'll be losing credibility amongst serious medievalists ..but then maybe he's laughing hysterically all the way to the bank.
i guess..it's whatever sells

Whether or not the remark is inane depends upon the context of the
remark. Sometimes an author makes a seemingly obvious point as a
necessary precursor to a related or larger point.
I think we should refrain from making cursory comments. We owe it to
Hicks and others to make sure we thoroughly understand the meanings and
contexts of their statements before we render judgment on the validity
of their works.
