The only likeness we have of her is in the Rous Roll.

I believe this is a very accurate representation of her as Rous would have actually seen her.
Certainly his drawing of Clarences daughter Margaret must be very accurate as if you
compare that with the well known portrait of Margaret as an older woman (with the little
barrel on her bracelet) you can definitely see it is the same woman - especially around the
eyes. Although these drawings are faded I think you can see there is a family likeness
between Anne and Margaret.

Re: [Richard III Society Forum] Queen Anne's picture

Very quick post - I'm at work.
Angelalebon - As well as the Rous Roll, there's also a drawing of
Anne in The Beauchamp Pageant (she's on a family tree of the
Kingmaker's family) and the Salisbury Roll (Richard and Anne in
Coronation Roll).
There's also a non-contemporary drawing of a lost stained glass
window from Skipton, I think, included in Hicks' Anne Neville. (I
read it and I don't agree with his interpretation of Anne's character
or her marriage to Richard. I also think he had very little material
and the publishers made the book look bigger by having big margins.)
Eileen - where is this picture of Margaret of Salisbury on Rous Roll
and later in life with the wine barrel on her wrist. I'd love to
compare her and Anne and see this resemblance.

Re: [Richard III Society Forum] Queen Anne's picture

I found the picture of grown-up Margaret on the Tudorplace website.
Just need the picture of her as a youngster.
Another thing I've remembered about Anne Neville's appearance. The
most modern translation of Croyland (Pronay and Cox) says that at
Xmas 1484 there were "vain exchanges of clothing between Queen Anne
and the Lady Elizabeth, who were alike in complexion and figure". So
maybe there was a Plantagenet resemblance between them. Hicks
suggests that this may have attracted Richard to Elizabeth (he is
very keen on the incestuous Richard wanted to marry his niece
theory). He also quotes Joanna Laynesmith as describing Anne as a
slim blonde. (I've ordered the Laynesmith book The Last Medieval
Queens from Amazon so should get it soon.)
Alternatively the older translations of Crowland used to say it was
the vain changes of apparel that were alike in colour and shape, so
take your choice.

I've got them both now. Thanks very much.
I think there is a family likeness. Young Margaret from Rous looks a
bit like Anne of Beauchamp Pageant. But grown-up Margaret is thinner
in the face than when she was young as looks more like Anne on the
Rous Roll.
