Sceptred Isle (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sceptredisle/message/400)
have just posted a message about Plantagenets and Tudors killing each
other, comparing them to cats. I think the poster is American and the
figures he quotes could include Richard and the "Princes".
Would anyone from the American Branch like to join in with the debate
he has launched on there?

the poster simply copied an article from
http://dsc.discovery.com/news/briefs/20060501/royals_his.html
personally, i'd have to agree with him that the tudors are like cats..haughty and arrogant, definitely willing to drive away anyone who might tred upon their territory...the lion roars. the king of beasts.
the poster did not compare/mention the plantagenets.
perhaps he meant too, and it was an oversight.

I was quite bemused to learn from this article that Richard II was

Nah, cats are intelligent, observant, independent, and good judges of
character. They're haughty and arrogant when it suits them, but can be
plenty affectionate and cuddly; and a pride of lions will generally play
and work well with each other until or unless invaded by rivals, or the
prey gets scarce. Cats are better than Tudors.

I'd compare the Tudors to a pack of hyenas.

The Tudors - a veritable Nest of Vipers
Carrying on from there - The Stanleys - pirrana fish - may they rot
forever!!
Eileen
==========================
About them Stanleys, I wonder a bit. They were very, very clear and
honest about whose side they were on: the side of Stanley. Other clans
would switch around, stab you or themselves in the back and reduce
themselves and you to pulp, but the Stanleys rarely, if ever, turned on
each other, and the message that, as long as you would be useful to
them, they'd be useful to you was very clear. Hire a Stanley, and you
knew what you were getting, which is more than you might get with other
families not directly tied to you - or directly tied to you, as witness
George versus Edward and Richard, or Warwick's turn (and possibly
Hastings' in 1483, but not prepared to swear on that one yet). It was,
I think the marriage to Margaret Beaufort which shot the Stanleys in the
foot, because it forced a commitment to a force outside of, and more
politically potent than the Stanleys themselves. You can see it in the
clumsy tactics used by the Thomas and William as Bosworth came closer,
and you can see it in William's beheading some ten years later and the
neutralization of Thomas during the Henry Tudor reign. For the most
part, during the two reigns of Edward IV, the Stanley clan was no better
or worse than any other grasping, ambitious noble family (about 95% of
the families in the nobility, I'd say), and possibly at least more
predictable because Stanley would be loyal to Stanley, over and above
whoever was in charge of the kingdom at any given time. That makes them
more like lions than like piranha.
A piranha would be more like Juan Pacheco, Marques of Villena, toward
Enrique IV and anyone who came near him.

I agree 103%. I've shared my home with cats for 31
years, and I've never had a cat that behaved like a
Tudor.
None of my cats ever stole a throne or backdated their
reign. (Henry VII) None of my cats ever imprisoned
stole their ward's inheritance, imprisoned them for
life, and executed them on trumped-up charges. (Henry
VII, Margaret Beaufort did this to Edward, Earl of
Warwick)
I'd say the comparison between cats and Tudors is
inaccurate and unfair.

Lets not forget that other murder of an innocent person on trumped up charges - Richards
niece Margaret Pole Duchess of Salisbury - executed in the most barbaric circumstances -
by the Weasles son Fat HenryVlll - an elderly lady hacked to death by an axe -
How the Tudors must have feared the Plantagenets - to wipe a whole family out.

rather than moaning here..why not take some action and contact discovery.com
with enough informed public opinion, the company might clean up its editorial policy.

one would think that a "business" in the business of presenting history would work to ensure accuracy, rather than opinionated misleading information.
if they continue thusly, their credibility will be tatters amongst serious researchers and all who they contact including school teachers.
demand a rewrite and/or rebuttal.

and if you'd like to contact prof kathleen heath who produced the study...
from the discovery.com article.
Heath, an associate professor of anthropology at Indiana State University, added, "Those who adapt best — better than his/her competitor — in a particular environment are favored by natural selection, that is, live longer and have a better chance of passing on their genes to the next generation."
Heath and her colleagues determined that the murdering royals never sacrificed lineal relatives. Of the 47 killed, only five were not cousins. These included one brother, two uncles and two nephews.
The researchers assigned genetic relatedness values to each individual, so that a parent, for example, is 50 percent, or .5, related to a child, while a full first cousin is .125.
Using these values, the scientists found that executioners never killed in excess of their own nuclear relatedness, meaning the total value assigned to the individual and his or her children.
it would appear her calculations are out, because it is only theory richard killed the boys, h7 and buckingham..especially bucks are far more likely candidates.
to h7 the boys are cousins, to bucks the boys are cousins and nephews of his wife, who possessed no brit royal bloodline.
you''ll find her webpage et al here.

I have re-read the original article and it does seem to cover the
whole 1399-1603 period, including THAT accusation against our Richard.
