Hi all,
I've just joined the forum, so heres a quick intro.
My name is Mark, I'm 41 and from Leicestershire.
I look forward to learning and hopefully contributing to the group.
Had the day off work today and as the weather was so good I made what is only my second trip to the site of the battle of Stoke Field 1487..this was prompted by the fact that it is very nearly the 519th Anniversary of the battle.
I thoroughly enjoyed my wanderings and that feeling of "place" that I often get when I know I am standing where momentus events have occured.
Look forward to speaking with you all soon.
Mark.

Katy you wouldn't be alone - They pronounce Arundel
like that here in the MD/DC/VA area - there's a
shopping mall called Arundel Mill Mall(Uh-RUN-dull
Mills Maul). It really screwed me up when I moved
here. I pronounced it like the Engligh. Don't EVEN get
me started on Wilkes-Barre (I thought Wilksberry was
somplace else).

Katy, Mishka,
I only mentioned this because of my own confusion on the pronunciation.
I started out pronouncing it correctly, then was influenced by some of the
movies which have come out in the last few years (one of the _Elizabeth_
movies, probably), but finally reverted to the original after hearing it spoken
on the train service and by the townspeople.
American towns with the same names as English or French ones often do
vary greatly in pronunciation. Isn't there a Versailles, Indiana, pronounced
"verSAIL' or such, rather than "verSIGH?"
LML,
Pam

"Versails," actually. The Midwest sems to have been highly influenced
by the romance of foreign place-names at some point in town-naming
history. All mispronounced. We have Cairo (kay-ro), Lima (lie-ma, as
in the bean), Peru (proo), and Chili (chi-lie, rhymes with sky high).
And then there is Pierre (peer) South Dakota.
