Paul Trevor Bale
Today is the anniversary of the coronation of King Richard III and
Queen Anne. July 6th 1483.
Party time everyone. Celebrate and have a flagon or two in memory of
the day!
God Save The King!

"The good reputation of his private life and public activities
powerfully attracted the esteem of strangers". - Dominic Mancini,
Report, 1483

I trust to God, by Michaelmas, the king shall be in London. He
contents the people where he goes best that ever did prince, for many
a poor man hath suffered wrong many days, hath been relieved and
helped by him, and his commands on his progress. An in many great
cities and towns were great sums of money given to him, which he hath
refused. On my troth, I never liked the condition of any prince so
well as his. God hath sent him to us for the weal of us all. - Christ
Church Letters - Thomas Langston, Bishop of St. Davidýs to the Prior
of Christ Church - September 1483

The most famous prince of blessed memory".- City of York Records, 1485

Can anyone remember any other monarch being spoken about in such glowing terms as
the above by their contempories. I understand it was a time when making fawning
statements about the reigning king/queen was the order of the day but somehow
comments like the above seem to have the ring of truth about them and of course the one
made in the City of York records was made after Richards death.

Eileen,
Interestingly the Mancini was for foreign eyes, and the Langton was
in a private letter. neither were written for public consumption,
therefore making them both of greater value than any public statement
which could be accused of 'sucking up'.

Yes - and it is in letters like this that we shall find the truth not the sproutings of lying gits
who wrote in the tudor period with their lies, innunedoes and 'some men deemeth'
'common fame' and other such tripe that was written by individuals that were not fit to lick
the boots of a king who strove during his short time as king to help his common people at
a time when this was unusual and went to his death fighting like a man for his crown and
country instead of snivvvling and surrounded by bodyguards like some cowardly wretch
who only got the throne through treachery.

Im feeling better now!

Better out than in, as they say. God, I couldn't agree more about the
value of relying on proper primary documentation. This all reminds me
of Anne Sutton and Livia Visser-Fuchs' talk at Cambridge last year,
on the subject of Richard's benefactions to the university. Five
years (I think) AFTER BOSWORTH, Thomas Barowe made a gift towards the
building of the university church, and in return the university
promised (and I wrote this down):-

"that the names of Richard III and Thomas Barowe, our benefactors,
will be recited openly and publicly before the masters who are
teaching . . in every school of the university on specific dates and
times, and ... they will be commended to the devout prayers of the
people by preachers . . . and on every Sunday in perpetuity commend
their souls ... and that on 21 August each year before the full
congregation of lecturers Placebo and Dirige will be sung, . . and
on the next day shall be sung a solemn mass in the same choir for the
souls of King Richard III and Anne his consort, his parents, his
brothers and all his dead servants ... "

Now, doesn't that do you good?

Yes Marie, exceedingly good. I say God bless Cambridge University, the City of York & all
the good men who stood by their king & died with him. Their names will live forever, well
to me at least - Brackenbury, Catesby, John Kendall, John Howard, Sir John Ferrers, John
Kendall and the names of the many, many more whom I am ignorant of - God Bless them
all!

Well perhaps not Catesby Eileen, who tried to get Tudor to take him
on as a servant and was hanged after the fighting for his troubles.
But the rest of them? Definitely. Each and every one of those who
fought and died for Richard will live on for me too.

I hate to admit it but it was one of the few things Thomas Stanley
did that makes me proud! The bastard deserved it! Thom supervised
the hanging and implemented Catesby's will.
