I may have been wrong but will have to be philosophical about it

Last week, I said that Lord John Russell (UK Prime Minister) and
Bertrand Russell (Mathematician) were descended from George of
Clarence. That may still be true but I cannot find the evidence at
present, until I can re-borrow Ruvigny.

However, I have proved that they were descended, twice, from Anne of
Exeter, through John, 8th Earl of Rutland. First, his daughter Frances
married John Cecil, 4th Earl of Exeter. Then his granddaughter
Catherine married John Leveson-Gower, Baron Gower.

Lord John Russell was Bertrand's grandfather. They were also descended
from Charles II through the Dukes of Richmond and, collaterally, from
the Admiral Byng who was shot for cowardice. Furthermore, the surname
of Dillon, in a French context, also appears - those of you who have
bought the "Stafford Line" will remember one Lord Stafford marrying a
Frances Dillon whose brother (General Arthur) was involved in the
French Revolution and was executed for it.

Please read "Files" in a few days time. I have also added the Harewoods
to the Lumleys and will post that soon.

Ann:

I see that GPC is offering Ruvigny on sale at quite a reasonable
price:

I don't think I can afford it but Ipswich Central Library may be
about to receive four volumes that I can get to fairly easily.

Are there any other Prime Ministers of Clarence or Exeter descent? I
think the Marquess of Salisbury and Arthur Balfour, his nephew, are
prime suspects here - I know that a Manners heiress married one of
the Earls of Exeter but they were the descendants of Lord Burleigh's
other son. However, there were so many intermarriages that this may
be feasible ...

{consults existing notes}

An early Cecil Earl of Salisbury did marry a Margaret Manners so it
is a distinct possibility.

Correct! The Marquis was descended from Anne of Exeter as was
Balfour, his full sister's son. I shall post another file soon.
